Design:

Dr. Vandermeer appeared in the original Sunbow miniseries. He was the brilliant scientist who helped the Joes by building a MASS Device for them.

I started with an IJ Henry Jones figure, one of the few suited figures Hasbro has made. The HJ figure has a bow tie instead of a regular tie, but it's close enough that it doesn't impact the design much. I replaced the herringbone textured arms with SW Kit Fisto ones. They also worked better as lab coat sleeves, and kept the Henry Jones jacket and arms together for a different figure down the road.

The bald Destro head was a good blank slate to use.

Colors & Paint:

Taken from the cartoon. I usually use light blue as a stand-in for clear lenses. On this figure, which has a lot of blue already, I switched gears and went with a buttery toffee to keep the eyeglasses from blending with the rest of the figure. I added age spots and different hair tones to help transition the character from a cartoon to a tangible more realistic object. The head has a certain Robert Duvall look to it.

Sculpting & Modifying:

The neck post was reshaped for the head. I removed the ears on the Destro head, which had been too close to the front of the face. I rounded out the top of the head, which was lopsided like Gumby. I sculpted the glasses and replacement ears and also filled the head dents. The lab coat is scratch built.

To create Gung Ho's rifle, which didn't survive teleportation, I made a push mold of the Snow Job rifle and warped it.
