Descended from Soviet era Gypsy refugees, "Nancy Pants" Sputnik was raised in the shadows of the Empire State Building, where she learned what it takes to survive on a daily basis. Never really fitting in with any of the social groups in her neighborhood, she developed a unique way to stay off of their radar, by sabotaging the groups, and playing them against each other. In this process, she learned how to sneak. Then she excelled at it. She spent a little time south of the law, breaking into homes and stealing valuables to help the family meet the bottom line. Once her father learned what she was doing, however, he enlisted her in the Army. Soon the punishment became an epiphany, and Esme found her calling.

Her natural instincts for stealth got her assigned to a number of top secret ops, which gave her combat experience which in turn advanced her through the ranks quicker than some of her fellow enlistees, and the black ops work put her into recruitment candidacy for GI Joe, where she was selected almost immediately. Her unusual preference for carrying, and fighting with, a sharpened trenching tool, and her method of concealing downed foes earned her the code name Digger.
