Like a phoenix, quite literally reborn from the ashes of Fort Wadsworth, Scarface - courier, pawn and patient zero during the early days of Cobra - became the quintessential survivor.
Little is known about the origins of Scarface, as is the case with most Cobra officers. It is suspected Scarface may have had some experiences in the intelligence community prior to joining the organization.
What is known is that he survived Cobra's attack on Fort Wadsworth and the events surrounding the time transformed him and his fate profoundly.
Scarface's changes appeared to manifest themselves only about the time he was being transported back into The Pit, blindfolded, on the back of a V.A.M.P. (as seen in #19). Whilst he thought that the result of the blindfolding had enhanced his other senses, in fact the combination of his heightened adrenaline, the sodium penthathol administered aboard the submarine, the plague infection and the antidote combined in a powerful chemical reaction in his system, increasing his senses, strength, agility and intelligence.
It appeared these changes also helped him survive the destruction of the fortress from the Cobra Sapper's bomb. Though badly injured, he managed to evade capture following the battle and even rallied some Cobra survivors. It is said he healed remarkably quickly and demonstrated a level of tactical and strategic acumen not seen previously.
Scarface stayed under the radar for a time, reconstituting and sustaining his group through a network of Cobra supply depots, and turning his team into a personal bodyguard. Threatening to expose Cobra's plans and facilities, he extorted a significant price in exchange for his continuing loyalty to Cobra - in both rank and financial terms.
Once back within Cobra, he sought his revenge against Major Bludd. Cornering him, he had Bludd's life in his hands but spared him, a courtesy Bludd had not given the Cobra Officer at Fort Wadsworth. (It is rumored, though, that Bludd made a significant financial concession in return). Although they've called a truce, the Cobra leadership has nonetheless taken pains to ensure they don't cross paths.
Currently Scarface holds the rank of Brigadier. Though normally no longer a tactical leader, his position as commander of the Tele-Viper corps in charge of Cobra communications affords him a position of power and respect.

Special thanks to JMM's GI Joe Character Guide for the some inspiration and background to this alternate history for a character I thought deserved a better fate and more complexity.
