The new Club newsletter arrived today, and it had pictures of the upcoming Past and Present Target figure sets. I'm not sure if the pictures are early mock-ups, but I certainly hope so. There are sets for Snake Eyes, Duke, Destro, and Storm Shadow, with the RAH versions apparently unchanged from the issue #21 and #24 comic packs, and the movie figures also apparently being unchanged.

If this is what we're getting, I have trouble imagining who will actually want to purchase them since the sets are total FAIL.

UPDATE: I saw the pictures posted from the Cobra vehicle site, and those look much better. Does the Destro figure have new arms, or are the paint apps just applied to make it look like the 92 mold has the wrist rockets?

The latter.

Yeah, after seeing the pics elsewhere I have no idea who would want these. There's nothing of interest in them at all, and Destro is warming pegs hardcore, so another release of his RoC mold is a really bad idea. Quick Hasbro! Switch it with a repaint of the SDCC suit Destro and watch the pack fly off the shelves. Or do something unique, like a frankensteined impact armor ARAH Duke and then take the movie Duke and put him in V1 colors. ANything other than rehashed molds with no changes. I hate to see stuff get cancelled, but it'd be better for these to stay in the idea stage rather than put more RoC merch on shelves that won't sell.

At least with the vehicle set both the ROC vehicle and pilot featured brand-new decos.
No such luck here.

And they didn't even bother fixing all the flaws in Duke and Snake-Eyes before doing this. Duke still has lower arms that don't fit with his upper arms because of the width (and that's without getting into the crappy "not rolled up sleeves" look he's been sporting since 1997) and that Gung-Ho waist that DOES NOT FIT. Snake-Eyes also features a waist that doesn't fit, that of 86 Roadblock. Both these figure constructions suffered from these problems for the past 12 years, yet Hasbro has never bothered to fix them.

Is it too late to tell them it sucks via the Q&A?

The concept is cool, the execution leaves much to be desired. And ridiculed. Just how many times does Hasbro think they can sell the same toys over and over?? Watch these warm the pegs till the world ends in 2012!

Was there any info about more Past/Present vehicle packs? I saw that Polar Battle Bear/Rock Slide set a few days ago and it was a pretty nice set, I hope they do more on par with that. Those figures on GenJoes look uninspired. Maybe the flaws will be fixed for the actualt release, and these are just mock ups...fingers crossed.

I'd get the Duke set. That head was only released once and with a tanned skintone and bright yellow hair. Getting a v1-styled Duke with that head in better colours would be worth it, plus an extra Reactive Armour fig for parts.

Dang, squeezing every last nickel they can from those molds, eh?

If they really wanted to make a ton of people happy, and make a few bucks, Id suggest they re-release every RAH figure they could find on new RAH style card art.

I'll probably get them since I don't have the ROC figures anyway

I saw the snow set at Target. Pass. No interest at all.

I expect I'll avoid the Destro set just because of how much I dislike the 92 molds. The other three, I'll wait until I see them in the stores.

Hasbro, if the original Storm Shadow molds are still viable, how about reissuing the Ninja-Viper? I could use a few more of those guys... ;-)

I'd have preferred Zartan, even the comic pack headed one, in original colors over Storm Shadow or Destro, and just about anyone over that Snake-Eyes.

I could've seen that working, especially if they'd make a ROC Zartan in casual attire instead of just PIT MP disguise Zartan.

Well, let's consider this: the character selection is obvious, but is it really that surprising as such? Duke, Destro, Storm Shadow, and Snake-Eyes have been major characters in the concept almost since the start, and all were certainly major players in the movie. I would expect if this line continues for the next two or three to feature Cobra Commander, Baroness, and Scarlett. Maybe even a Cobra Viper.

Hasbro isn't necessarily doing this Past and Present line for US, particularly. I think they're trying to do a "blend" for (a) parents who remember the line as a kid but weren't necessarily the die-hard collectors which most of the people on this and most other G.I. Joe related message boards would qualify as being, and (b) kids and other newcomers to the concept as a result of the movie, who may have some knowledge about the history of the line but never paid much attention to it. So they get a "modern" figure and a "historical" figure.

Personally, I was very pleased with the Past and Present "Rockslide" set, if for no other reason than it gave me a nice, white, clean, traditional-style Snow Job -- something not easily located these days otherwise.

Will this line succeed? Time will tell. The toys in general seem to have fared very well over the Christmas season, I would certainly say well above average -- although I was in a Toys "R" Us today and the entire action figure section was pretty well emptied, and I spoke at some length with a couple of managerial personnel whom I know who were very pleased with the results of the holiday season -- but clearly, the G.I. Joe product line is selling very nicely just now. I'm going to try to be hopeful that some traditional-style figures can be a part of its continued success. :-D

I missed out on these comic packs. I also don't have the Duke or Storm Shadow RoC figures, either. That being said, I probably won't be buying any of these. I can go get the RoC figures for a total of ten bucks if I decide I wanted those two, and their o-ringed counterparts aren't that great.
