 Post subject: 3D Printer Test (was Dalek WIP), new print posted 4-27

So I got my new printer and tested with a file from thingiverse. I turned this

Need to trim up and add eye stalk, plunger and whisk thing.

Yes. It uses a roll of plastic as 'ink', and extruded it on three planes.

It's like a fancy at home pasta maker, except it comes out on all three axis. X, Y, and Z...

It's 3D.

Wow, $499 isn't so crazy in comparison to what I thought. Does it come with it's own software? Do you need a CAD program or any specific experience to use it? Is it as simple as download file and "print"?

All the software to print is available on their website. There are several file repositories that have images to download, or you can make your own in CAD. Sketchup is good and free, along with others like FreeCAD.
With Sketchup, you just need the STL export plugin to get it to a format for the printer, but then you also have access to the Sketchup repository.
If you just use ready made stuff, it's pretty easy. If you want to design your own projects, then you'll need to learn CAD of some sort. Autodesk also has their 123 line, that includes an app to take a series of pictures and create a 3D model from them.
