Last night I tried the RIT dye technique for the first time. It didn't work out at all like I'd hoped. I first tried the technique outlined in the wiki, then another idea I had, both to no avail, then I took the last of the dye I had, poured it into a cup and let the pieces soak in straight up, no diluted dye over night. Bupkis.

I thought I had read somewhere on the site that the new liquid dye doesn't work for crap like the old powdered dye.

Any other options for doing a whole figure colouring job besides painting?

Yeah, this one... it's sad - but this may be a dead form of customizing.

First, find the older powder if you can, it still works. Clearance sections of older fabric stores and craft stores may still stock it.

Liquid is bad. Just doesn't work at all. Even if you boil the parts. Even if you add nail polish remover. It just doesn't work.

And pretty much forget about dying 25th+ stuff altogether, as the mismash of different plastics make it impossible to dye it evenly, and the soft plastic parts tend to give up the dye over time.

I have heard that acetate works to create dye penetration, and on the other side, I've heard that peroxide helps too. Don't mix them, as I think it makes poison gas... I have not had luck with either.

Glad I read this. I had been thinking of trying to dye some pieces. Disappointing

And I tried finding the stuff he mentions. No luck at all - and the danger and mess factor seem a little high for me to get involved with.

I bought the local Michael's out of the old school stuff. When it's gone, it's gone - and I think that it will be the end of that for me.

I still have about 12 or so bottles of rit dye I bought about 4 years ago, glad I got it when i did. never tried it on modern era figs, but it's great with vehicles
