For centuries, members of the Destro family traditionally wore a mask of polished berylium steel whenever they conducted business. James McCullen Destro III continued this tradition when he took charge of M.A.R.S., and later, Cobra. When the Baroness decided to leave Cobra for a time, Destro removed his mask and went with her, leaving the reigns of Cobra to Darklon. Destro stayed out of Cobra's affairs for over a year, but he also kept a close eye on its activities.

Metal-Head, a spy for Destro, implanted in Cobra, informed Destro that Cobra Commander planned to launch an offensive against him. Destro readied his castle for an offensive, donning his family mask once again. He also added wrist rockets from an older suit of battle armor to his newer battle togs. With the aid of Chuckles, Destro managed to elude Cobra Commander's clutches.
