Helfire-Vipers provide primarily defensive fire support as part of the crew of Cobra tactical transport helicopters. In the air they employ their light machine gun from pintle-mounts at side or rear doors. In a tactical landing situation where the aircraft needs to loiter on the ground, they dismount to provide a secure cordon. They operate subordinate to the flight engineer and load master and can be called on to assist either.
