During the initial testing of the Negator, M.A.R.S. realized early on that an ordinary driver was driven to wits end trying to deal with the abilities and operating systems of the vehicle.

To offset these complications M.A.R.S. developed cybernetics that would allow the operator to obtain and react to information more quickly. The system practically plugged the operator directly into the vehicle's systems.

Implants into the central nervous system and cerbral cortex as well as reflex wiring that transmits neuro stimuli to and from the brain more quickly.

The results were the Phalanx. A vehicle operator able to react at lightning speeds to the flurry of information coming from the battlefield and the vehicle's own systems. Unfortunately the use of the implants had a mortal cost. Mental breakdowns became common after just a few years, so having fresh meat is a necessity in the IG ranks to keep the Negators rolling.
