The Mechanic used to ride with a 1% group that disbanded. He then roamed the wastes as a nomad until he stumbled upon a group of 'Noks in need of a little roadside assistance.

After fixing a number of various issues with the rogue bikers' rides the 'Noks decided to forgo the normal joining process and immediately initiated The Mechanic into the group.
