Once I had all the main Joe and Cobra characters released up through 1988 represented in 25th Anniversary/Modern Era style, I started cherry picking the line for additional characters to round out my Joe team. There were reasons I had largely tuned out of Joe by 1989 -- most having to do with the inherent silliness of characters introduced and the ludicrous designs they were given. But there were some standouts.

Topside was always one of those to me. He not only had an essentially realistic look to him, but he also filled an important hole in the Joe roster, which was sorely lacking in Navy guys.
