The idea for this custom started with the claws from the Electric Eel figure. They're quite monstrous in appearance so I thought they matched the theme of the Hydro-Viper, as illustrated by its fins and helmet. The backstory of the Hydro-Viper is pretty terrifying, and while the figure is one of my very favourite Cobra troops, it doesn't quite live up to the story, being a bit slim and underwhelming in that regard, and the shade of purple isn't all that intimidating. So I wanted to make a more extreme version, make it more monstrous. I chose red as the main colour partly based on Cobra divers from the cartoon, which I did as a custom last year (Sea Serpent).

One of the things I like about the Hydro-Viper is the description that they are surgically altered to withstand nitrogen narcosis and other side effects of deep diving. By combining the information from the figure's file card and the profile printed in an Action Force comic, we can list the known alterations as follows: joints hardened with plastic implants, filters fitted into major arteries, subcutaneous fat production stimulated by chemical injection, rib cage strengthened with steel rods, sheets of synthetic cartilage fitted between ribs, oxygen uptake of lungs artificially increased, and finally synthetic webs implanted between the fingers.

To make it a bit more horrific, we can add modified retinas to allow vision of near-UV light, an internal rebreather circuit, and artificial blood cells which allow the blood to be much thinner and remove the need for hemoglobin, resulting in a pallid complexion.
