Robo-Joe spent the early part of his time with the team with his body integrated into a massive armored shell. The suit of armor was found well suited for operations in deep space, so he served as a member of the Star Brigade.
Using an experimental program dating back to WWII called MARC (Military's Advanced Robotic Combatant), Robo-Joe and other GI Joe scientists have spent the last several years peeling him out of the shell and replacing his broken or missing limbs with advanced cybernetic implants. Equipped with a state-of-the-art LEAP jet pack, Robo-Joe blasts into battle on the front lines serving his team in a broader capacity.
Originally pieced together as part of a "super-hero" team called Freedom Guard (a comic book concept I had been working on years ago), this figure was conceived as a character called MARC. As I further developed a small group of custom figures the concept a of Freedom Guard as part of my Joe line was dismissed, and he became a new version of Robo-Joe.
