Me and my young son were playing and he wanted to go through my parts bin. He does this every so often. This time, he wanted to build a guy. I let him pick the parts and I put them together for him. I liked the parts he chose and was determined to make a character based on his choice.
I entertained the idea of making this guy either Dart or Spirit, but I decided I would make him an original character since his design is pretty far removed from either of those figures. I named him Apache just to keep it simple and easily recognizable.
I wanted to at least put SOME red on the figure somewhere since I would not employ the ubiquitous waist-cloth. I decided to paint the piping on the vest red and also paint the tooth necklace red. I also added a couple waterslide decals just to throw some more red on the figure. As an afterthought, I painted his wrists gold to make them more bracelet-like.
On the filecard for G.I.Joe Airborne, it mentions him being born in the Navajo reservation in Arizona. Spirit's filecard does not mention of any tribe or nation, but it does list his birthplace as Taos, New Mexico. The big tribes in New Mexico were the Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache. Okay, so I thought about making this guy a Navajo to match up with Airborne, but I decided to make him an Apache. I researched Apache war-paint and decided on the simple white and black nose-bridge paint.
I know that the Mohawk is not closely associated with the Apache, but they were known to have partly shaved heads with a small patch of hair on the crown of the head, so I felt like I could use the Marauders Mohawk Head. I gave Apache some edged weapons to really nail home the image of a man employing weapons for silent combat. Having said that, I also gave him a SAW to give him some backup firepower.
