The S-37 Berkut [Golden Eagle] is a testbed for developing technologies for the next generation of aircraft, theMultirole Front-Line Fighter [MFI - Mnogofounksionalni Frontovoi Istrebiel ]. The basic dimensions and weight of the S-37 "Berkut" are similar to those of Su-37. The Sukhoi enterprise claims the new fighter would be able to outperform the F-22 Raptor, the most advanced US air-superiority fighter. Although the primary mission of the MFI is air-superiority, unlike the F-22 the MFI is also capable of performing strike missions.
The S-37 features forward-swept wings, which promises a range of benefits in aerodynamics at subsonic speeds and at high angles of attack, makes extensive use of composite materials. The aircraft has small canards mounted on the sides, close to the leading edge of the wing. The vertical stabilizers are canted slightly outward. The power plant is the D-30F6 turbojet which is normally used by the MiG-31M.
The fifth-generation pulse-Doppler radar has a phased-array antenna with electronic scanning to simultaneously attack over 20 targets. The S-37 has a digital control-by-wire flight control system which provides excellent handling qualities, and allows pilots to learn to fly the airplane with relative ease. Other components included a navigation forward looking infrared (NAVFLIR) pod, a head-up display, night vision goggles, a digital color moving map and an independent multipurpose color display.
The aircraft can carry long-range air-to-air and air-to-surface guided missiles, and it is armed with twin 25-mm cannon and has six hard points for ordinance.
