The ZU-39 is a towed, short- to medium-range, single-barrel 39mm antiaircraft gun system. The ZU-39 machine gun is an air-cooled, disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, blowback operated, fully automatic weapon and is crew transportable over short distances with limited amounts of ammunition (though this application is very manpower intensive and not widely used) . The weapon is mostly mounted on a towed two-wheel carriage. The ZU-39 has a quick-change barrel and a dual rate of fire for use against aircraft or ground targets.

It replaced the earlier 3.7cm models in most Warsaw Pact units. It is a powerful weapon, well suited to attack medium armored vehicles as well as aircraft. In addition to on-carriage optical fire control, the ZU-39 also employs off-carriage fire control director and the SON-9A radars.

Ammunition is fed from box magazines mounted on the outside of the trunnion. Reloading is fast and uncomplicated. The magazine is easily accessible and the beginning link of the new belt attaches to the link of the last old cartridge which automatically interrupts the firing cycle when it reaches the feed way and signals the bolt to remain open.

The ZU-39 is found in the antiaircraft regiment of some motorized rifle and tank divisions to protect critical assets. It usually appears as a main weapon for the PVO Air Defense Forces. It also may be found in territorial defense units, especially around airfields. A typical ZU-39 battery will generally consist of two to six guns, a fire-control radar, and a fire-control director.
