I've always been a big fan of Gung-Ho, but his figures always left me cold (especially the '83 and '87 versions with their "big doofus" head sculpts). I'd always wanted a bigger version of Gung-Ho to reflect his size in the comics. I also wanted to stay away from the open-shirted vest look because a) it's been done, and b) it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to always be walking around without a shirt. Therefore, I chose to have him in a T-shirt and removable vest. However, I didn't want to lose the classic Marine Corps chest tattoo (because, let's face it, putting a shirt on Gung-Ho is also a cop-out that allows you to get away without doing the chest tattoo). So I figured he could just have the same logo on his t-shirt. It's actually decoupaged on there, not painted. The Mainframe lower body was exactly what I was looking for. I got a knife on one leg, the means to add a sidearm to the other, a Marine Corps belt buckle, plus a general bulky look that fit with the Salvo parts. The vest doesn't really ride up that much. It just kept getting "mashed" when I tried to scan it.
I realize that having a grenade launcher and a rifle with a grenade launcher attached is a bit repetitive. However, I felt that Gung-Ho needed a weapon other than a grenade launcher, (i.e., a rifle), and he just looked so damn cool with that rifle with a grenade launcher attached.
I also anticipate a lot of people having kittens because his mustache isn't regulation or whatever. For me, the card art on the '83 Gung-Ho (with the bigger mustache) has always defined the character's look. And I enjoy it when he's depicted with this bigger type of 'stache. To each his own, I suppose.
