Working on the theory that most of nature's most deadly predators hunt alone, Cobra began a unique project to come up with some of their own deadly predators.

The Hybrid Program. With the success of the first Hybrid Viper, a combination of Night and Alley Vipers, Cobra continued with highly intensive physical and mental training and brainwashing, blending the specialties of the Night Viper with that of the Sand Viper, to come up with Nightcrawler. Forced combat training while blindfolded for weeks at a time and being left in the middle of the desert with only minimal gear with orders to attack, sabotage and perform demolitions on enemy strongholds are only a couple of the tasks forced upon these candidates. When Nightcrawler not only survived, but thrived, Dr. Mindbender knew he had his next Hybrid Viper.
