Duke was an interesting custom to make. While he was very popular in the 1980's cartoons he never really got his due in the comic series by Marvel. He was not even that important of character to me as a child. However, when I saw "We Were Soldiers" the character played by Sam Elliot was what I pictured Duke to be like in my JoeVerse. I wanted Duke to wear a throw back uniform, the fatigues from the Vietnam era were perfect. I also wanted a very simple custom, not a lot of weapons or gadgets, just the basics of what a Soldier would need. I chose to give him a little known weapon that has been around since the early 1970's and did see action in Vietnam. At first I was going to use a M-1Carbine, or Thompson, but those just weren't unique enough for me. I also gave him the M-1911A1 that he had in the comics, and also a tribute to Sam Elliot's character in "We Were Soldiers". I tried to capture the look of the original but make him more realistic. I have seen some versions of Duke and some customs that portray him in black and with tech gear, no thanks. I wanted a crusty old First Sergeant and I believe I accomplished it. This custom is simple, but like a good First Sergeant what you see is what you get, nothing fancy, just honest and reliable.
