Raffy was the son of a factory worker. Large family. Ten children, Raffy was in the middle. Three of his brothers are in the Royal Air Force as well, one a sniper, the other two are pilots.

The Royal Air Force was created in 1918, and the Royal Air Force Regiment was formed in 1942, it's motto, 'Per Ardua', through adversity.
