Head: Knockdown
Chest/back: Techno-Viper (modified)
Arms: Big Ben
Waist: Deep Six v2 (modified)
Legs: Ozone?
Helmet: SWCW Obi Wan Kenobi (modified)
Design:
Like several other of my customs, this was inspired by something from the Science Channel. It's an old clip of footage of a Cosmonaut in his space suit. When I saw the blue "piping" on the suit, it looked roughly like the Techno-Viper uniform. The finished figure is a hybrid of 1960's era Cosmonaut space suits and more current ones. The best thing about this figure is that I pretty much hate all of the awkward parts, but like the finish product. The Ozone legs are very blah, but they make for okay space attire. The Big Ben arms especially turned out better then I thought they would.
The space helmet took some doing, but I like the end result. The helmet is oversized, but this adds to the look of the figure. This figure wouldn't have been complete without one, so it was in unfinished figure limbo until I stumbled onto the new Obi Wan figure.
Colors & paint:
The biggest challenge was to not apply any "Communist" red to the figure and stick to the existing real world color schemes. I originally planned on red boots and shoulder padding, perhaps with a red star on the center of the chest. But I knew that would start to look too superhero, so I backed away from it.
To get the spray paint to adhere to the rubbery plastic, it has a thick undercoat layer of acrylic purple. This is the first time I've put a super gloss finish on a metallic surface (for the space helmet lens), and I was very pleased with the result.
Sculpting:
I don't know what the round discs are on the real Cosmonaut suits- probably some kind of umbilical ports? But I sculpted them on and, by accident, ground away the upper portion flap part of the Deep Suit waist.
The helmet is an Obi Wan SWCW helmet, with the chest/back flap removed and framing sculpted.
Thanks for looking.
