EFFECTS.

When I saw the Effects figure('s face), I thought he was a Cobra agent. Seems to look too grizzly for a joe.

MERCER v2

I get it that he's a Cobra defector, but his v2 design just screams Iron Grenadiers.

Sci-Fi would've been designed in early 1985 to make his 1986 release date.

It just doesn't add up.
Concept art would have been started on the Robocop movie well over a year before the movie started shooting. It took 8 months just to fabricate the suit for Weller after he was measured.

Show me some RoboCop deisgns that were widely known/circulated in 1985 or some info from someone who worked at Hasbro and I might buy it. Usually movie inspired GI Joe figures came well after the source material.

Agreed. It doesn't really make sense unless someone can show a through line.

Barricade looks more like Robocop than Sci-Fi.

I've seen pics of Mutt where his uniform was Cobra blue instead of green, I was never sure if that was his intended Cobra look, a foreign version or a custom.
With Mutt being my favorite character, I do like that look for him, just not as an agent of Cobra.

Wasn't Snake Eyes originally a Cobra? Hence the name? The all black uniform was a money saver, but I thought I'd heard/read he was supposed to be a Cobra as well.

I've heard that Snake Eyes was to be a Cobra spy, i.e. the Snake's Eyes.

I've heard that Effect's first name was Steel Brigade Jones, or something strange like that.

Never seen anything about this one, but Night Vulture could easily pass as a Snake Eyes figure.

"How does Cobra keep getting the drop on us?"
"I have no idea. They must have us bugged or something."
"Do you think it's a traitor?"
"What?! No! Everyone here is thoroughly vetted!"
"Even the guy who never speaks and never takes off his mask so we don't even know what he looks like?"
"Even him."
"But his code name, it's snake-themed, just like Cobra."
"Just a coincidence."
"Are you sure? I mean, we didn't have these problems before he showed up."
"Positive. They had to have bugged us."
"I wonder if it's too late to transfer to the Screaming Eagles, The Corps, or any other outfit..."
"What's that?"
"Oh, nothing."

I also always thought the Night Vulture mold was originally intended to be used for a Snake Eyes figure.
