When I was a kid, I loved the idea of Transformers and GI Joe being in the same universe. However, I hated the idea of GI Joe interacting with aliens, superheroes, monsters, etc. For some reason, Transformers (one of the least believable types of aliens to be, if you really think about it) were just fine mixing in with the Joes, but not the Lunartix or other aliens.
I liked superheroes, but I did not want them existing alongside either my Joes or my Transformers. I had no problem with Serpentor existing and sort of accepted Cobra-La, but mutants, mummies, and other monsters were just right out.
I've loosened up some on that and allow for mixing now, where my only concern is scale and consistent/similar design amongst brands. In fact, in search to make sure I hadn't posted this thread before, I came across this post I made a few years ago. That's still pretty much the backstory for my collection, making sense of the various lines I have any interest in.

So what illogical play habits did you have as a kid? If you're still a 'world builder' collector, what ones do you have now? Which ones have you eased up on or let go of?

Since the Hacks have come out, some of the 6" or larger fantasy figures are now Giants in my uncle verse for those

as a kid I had a lot of 1 of toys or garage sale lots. I seem to remember getting a ton of silver hawks all at once, but don't quite remember how. I do remember opening joes and throwing small accessories away! same with the few joe vehicles I had, small missiles and full sticker sheets got thrown away with the box. I still am unshure why? I played with tinkertoys and Lincoln logs with joes a lot. lego's and knock offs got no respect, those were real projectils to hurl at my cousin. I have never put together a model of anything.

as an adult. no rules excelt "i'm not a collector" and "toys as art" which I break all the time :) so no rules!

As a kid, my Crimson Guard and Cobra Viper were individuals and were good guys. They were usually heroes in my adventures. They and the rest of my GI Joes would not fight Cobra. Their enemies were all Star Wars and Adventure People figures.

Every character I had as a kid used the cartoon personality, and didn’t follow the comics at all. Duke and Scarlett were a thing, Flint was second in command, Hawk was the leader but I used him a lot less than Duke.

Since the toon ended after 86/87, I started using bits of the comics to use in stories. IG, Tiger Force, etc. we’re all lifted from the comics.

joes never died. They got injured, but never died. Nor did they intermingle with other toy lines, unless I was using a vehicle or something.

My best friend did the opposite, everybody fought everybody and mingled. He called it “galaxies”. In galaxies, there was no joe/cobra, you just used the coolest looking guy on your team.

I honestly can’t remember how I played. I know I had all my toys mixed together in a huge football shaped toy box. I can’t imagine I didn’t blend the toy lines together and just do whatever I wanted, which is probably why I enjoy customizing so much and why I currently consider any toy lines/universes as potential crossovers. There are no rules in my world.

But I think I played just transformers and just GI joe frequently acting out the shows.

I’m not sure how many people here will remember it, but in 1990 there was an anti-drug cartoon released called Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue. I was four at the time and huge into TMNT and I thought it was so cool seeing all these characters together dealing with a problem. Since then, I’ve never felt like I had to keep any property separate from another.

One of the biggest draws about this scale for me is the ability to have this wide ranging crossover. I actually wasn’t really into Joes as a kid, but I did have almost all of the Street Fighter line. I got heavier into Joes during the first movie and moreso once I started customizing.

The lynchpin for me becoming a 1:18 stalwart was the Indiana Jones line. Much of whatever headcannon I have for a fictional universe of my own hinges on Indy’s possible multi universe adventures. That’s what makes incorporating all these characters fun for me, imagining how Indy would interact with them.

I mixed my toys a lot. I played with my GI Joe figures all the time, but they were usually used as made up characters. Flash led my team for a long time then Blowtorch did for a while and Falcon took command.
Playmobil were used as civilians. I usually acted car chases/scenes with Matchbox cars .
Before the release of the Marvel Secret Wars figures, the Hiss Driver was my Spider-Man.
Cobra Commander once stole Super Powers' Superman's cape and was able to fly for an afternoon.
Ace was often used as Captain Future which was very popular in the early 80's in French Canada.
Castle Grayskull was more often than not Cobra's lair.

Most of the time Cobra Commander was in league with Boss Hogg. I remember getting my only MASK toy at the time, Miles Mayhem and that blue jet thing. He was a midget and work for Cobra in my universe. Buck Rogers was a Joe and most female figures were something that rhymed with Joe, especially Daisy Duke

Thanks, guys. It's great to hear how people played with their toys and the imagination that went into it.

The Ballad of GI Joe is my canon.

The one thing recall the most from my childhood toy playing habits was that i couldn't accept any figure that didn't have swivel biceps. I recall distinctly owning Toybiz Wolverine (brown suit) and Colossus and thinking " ...they can't 'do' anything". They couldn't hold weapons. They wouldn't karate kick / side kick. Thy couldn't rappel down the rear of my bed aka the cliff face of the Cobra base (like Hit and Run and Roadblock). Admittedly i was just exiting playing with toys in favour of girls when Toybiz launched their figures but even prior to...i just couldn't accept it *i'm looking at you TMNT*. Even other 1:18th scale figures wouldn't be accepted if they didn't have swivel biceps generally speaking.

I imagine my life would be fundamentally different if i had a been more accepting of this lack of articulation point *or* if Toybiz had given their X-Men and Marvel figures better articulation in the early 90's . I'd have easily been amongst the dedicated Marvel figure fans today. Marvel Universe was too little too late. The most i can muster is a "meh" despite the wealth of product.

I was a Joe kid 100% (after growing out of MOTU) .
