EXACTLY! That's my take too. I think the renegades had more potential for awesome stories and missions than just about any other sub-group. Mercer alone, being a defected Viper, is just chock full of good story lines waiting to happen. Not to mention the drama of how his team members relate to him. Do they even know, or are only the top brass aware of his dirty past? Are there rumors circulating about him? Is he paranoid every time he goes into the civilian world, afraid Cobra agents are still after him to punish him for his disloyalty? I'm surprised all this was not explored in the comic.
Anyway, the figures themselves are kinda mediocre, as are their accessories, and their coloring is just ridiculous. If anyone, they are the ones who should be in all black movie-outfits.
