What about that Steam-Roller is modern exactly? He looks like a standard o-ring-type figure to me.

You mean the ARAHC/New Sculpt era? Modern usually refers to current figures beginning with the 25th line. I've never seen it applied to anything else.

It gets used mostly (in my experience) as short hand when dealing with O-RING preproduction. Obviously if you're looking at something non-O-ring it speaks for itself. You don't really need to say modern or vintage because it is obvious what it is and what era it is from. But sometimes at first glance an unpainted test shot that is o-ring can raise the question over whether it is ARAH or later. Sometimes it is really obvious when a test shot is "modern" (post-ARAH). Sometimes not so much.

So yes, when referring to production level figures you could buy at retail, modern is pretty "specific" to 25th and up.

But when it comes to preproduction... the line is kinda drawn between ARAH and ANYTHING that came after. And retains the vocabulary as vintage (ARAH) vs modern (post-ARAH).
