But if they lose the license, will they even have the right to sell the leftover merchandise? Lego doesn't get to sell any leftover TMNT stuff come January, so why would Fun?
I'm not sure that's a fair comparison for two reasons. One -- the Club doesn't try to sell their stuff at Walmart and Target. Two -- we don't know the nature of the agreement between Hasbro and the Club. It might allow for this.
If the Club is losing the license, I'm sure they won't want to have to deal with leftover merchandise. I would expect to see some clearance sales.
On the other hand, consider this. I suspect any number of us have bought or sold G.I. Joe, and other copyrighted merchandise, on eBay. None of us have ever entered into agreements with Hasbro, or Bandai, or Mattel, or Lego, or any other company to sell the stuff we have.
I think regarding any of this, we're just going to have to wait and see. I've heard two entirely different reports about what's going on, both from reliable sources, but both going in quite different directions, so I'm not prepared to repeat either one of them.
I'll just add this -- I would hate to see the Club and Convention end. Has FunPub made some mistakes? Yes. Has FunPub turned out some awesome exclusive merchandise over the years? Yes. But -- I think they've done a lot more, especially in recent years, to keep interest in G.I. Joe up than Hasbro has.
I'm not convinced Hasbro gives a damn about G.I. Joe anymore other than the next movies. Beyond the Club, there's not much other than Larry Hama's Real American Hero comic through IDW, and thank God for it. The meager product line offered to Toys "R" Us, regardless of how cool some of it may be, just doesn't amount to much.
From a business standpoint, I can understand Hasbro wanting to focus on Star Wars and Marvel. Those are both hot properties these days. But that doesn't do any favors to Joe fans. And I don't think an internally-run Club would amount to much of anything, any more than the current Hasbro product line does.
Faults aside, I really do believe that the Club is keeping some "organized" interest in G.I. Joe alive, that wouldn't otherwise exist.
Just my thoughts on it.
All of this has pretty much been my thoughts on it. All the "rejoicing" among the various factions of Facebook, especially among some of the TF guys, I think a lot of people are going to be sadly disappointed if this comes to pass.
