As a small business, they could sell all the inventory to an employee for $1 and then that person would continue to sell it as secondary market.

Interesting idea. I wonder if they've thought of that?

I'm sure they'll be able to sell off their remaining stock if Hasbro or the new licensee don't buy it. They just won't be able to make any more or call themselves the Club.

Also the "official information" that was reported to be coming in the January newsletter was what we already knew - no memberships beyond 2016. If yours renews or you join it will just be for the remaining months in 2016.

But if they lose the license, will they even have the right to sell the leftover merchandise? Lego doesn't get to sell any leftover TMNT stuff come January, so why would Fun?

I'm not sure that's a fair comparison for two reasons. One -- the Club doesn't try to sell their stuff at Walmart and Target. Two -- we don't know the nature of the agreement between Hasbro and the Club. It might allow for this.

If the Club is losing the license, I'm sure they won't want to have to deal with leftover merchandise. I would expect to see some clearance sales.

On the other hand, consider this. I suspect any number of us have bought or sold G.I. Joe, and other copyrighted merchandise, on eBay. None of us have ever entered into agreements with Hasbro, or Bandai, or Mattel, or Lego, or any other company to sell the stuff we have.

I think regarding any of this, we're just going to have to wait and see. I've heard two entirely different reports about what's going on, both from reliable sources, but both going in quite different directions, so I'm not prepared to repeat either one of them.

I'll just add this -- I would hate to see the Club and Convention end. Has FunPub made some mistakes? Yes. Has FunPub turned out some awesome exclusive merchandise over the years? Yes. But -- I think they've done a lot more, especially in recent years, to keep interest in G.I. Joe up than Hasbro has.

I'm not convinced Hasbro gives a damn about G.I. Joe anymore other than the next movies. Beyond the Club, there's not much other than Larry Hama's Real American Hero comic through IDW, and thank God for it. The meager product line offered to Toys "R" Us, regardless of how cool some of it may be, just doesn't amount to much.

From a business standpoint, I can understand Hasbro wanting to focus on Star Wars and Marvel. Those are both hot properties these days. But that doesn't do any favors to Joe fans. And I don't think an internally-run Club would amount to much of anything, any more than the current Hasbro product line does.

Faults aside, I really do believe that the Club is keeping some "organized" interest in G.I. Joe alive, that wouldn't otherwise exist.

Just my thoughts on it.

All of this has pretty much been my thoughts on it. All the "rejoicing" among the various factions of Facebook, especially among some of the TF guys, I think a lot of people are going to be sadly disappointed if this comes to pass.

As a 1/6 G.I.JOE Collector this feels like the final nail in the coffin. While I can gripe about certain aspects of the club, I'm going to take the high road and say this, For me the one plus this year is Mike Power: The Atomic Man Membership figure, I love the Adventure Team concept of G.I.JOE, I feel the club missed giving us troop builders for it's AT Enemy MARS, sure we did the the Man of Evil, the Henchmen, and a foot soldier in the heavy weapons box set Last man standing, but the club could have really made some revenue with uniform sets for the 12" collectors. But last year we did get the very cool Isotope glow in the dark figure, and if this is truly the final year of the club then at least giving fans Mike Power is a great end. Old Soldiers don't die.......they just fade away.

I'm not rejoicing but I do think it's a good decision. FunPub has made too many mistakes which easily justifies this action. I think we have gone on too long with rewarding FunPub by continuing to support it's business when they clearly think little of us. It's time for new blood to try to breathe new life in to the club and convention. Things are changing regardless. GIJoe is practically dead at retail, interest in the line is waning. A new group running the club may be able to get some old fans back. If this fails, then it fails. I still think it needed to be done.

Fun Pub definitely has some issues, and it's amazing that they haven't been fixed over the years. I don't think there's any denying that. It's also a far cry from the total amount of grief they get, whether it's unrealistic expectations, people piling on things that can (and does) happen to any business (admittedly easy to do because of many of their avoidable bad actions) or people expecting unfeasible price points because they don't understand economies of scale combined with profit margin or paying for operations of a convention.

The fact that it's practically dead at retail, and there's literally nobody clamoring to snatch up the license is exactly why this isn't something to be celebrated. As many issues as they did have, at least they actually made a fair selection of product available - and that is something that is extremely unlikely to be continued by or if anyone who follows. Assuming the rumors are true, unless we're extremely lucky, this won't be breathing new life into the club and convention - it'll be the death knell of one or both. Particularly if you're one of the people that like to have an assortment of items to choose from.

This from today's email from Brian about the convention and Club.

Quote:
Please note the following: March 16 is the last day you can join the GI Joe Collectors' Club. If you are interested in receiving the discounts for GIJoeCon, the 2016 FREE figure(s) or in FSS 5.0 you will need to be an active member as of March 16. All memberships will end December 31, 2016.

We appreciate your support over the last 20 years.

I think that's a pretty subtle way to say the Club as we know it is gone after this year. Sad and disappointing but at least they aren't going out with a whimper (at least at this point) and look to be giving us some more product this year with the convention stuff AND FSS 5.0.

Cue the Club bashing in 3... 2...

So I just read the transformers collectors club email made it perfectly clear that there are plans for something regarding a transformers club in the future. The GIJCC email had no such hint. Bummer.

That matches up with the rumors floating around that whoever got the convention license got it for the Transformers side of it. I guess time will yell what Hasbro plans to do with GI Joe.

They mentioned that, just no note about Hasbro wanting to share news of the future club with us like they do with the transformers club.

Although how they get FSS 5.0 fully shipped by December 31, 2016 is a question.
