Sure there will be those who go "nah its too expensive" (just like SOME said a 25th con set was impossible etc.) or whatever,

but i think a chess themed con set would be beautiful.
If i am not mistaken there was even a cover for such in the old marvel run.

While you would need 32 figs, there are some ways to get around it by doing 16 in a chess order (a destro set, or a cobra set) and then doing 2 sets of stickers (and thereby having folks get 1 bagged set as extra ).


A sweet joe board could be the giveaway (with a half map half chess set-i.e. like a map with longitude and latitude lines with cobra island, the US, springfield on the map, borovia, etc. etc.)

and you can have extra queens as a giveaway, and maybe even a joe bag to keep it in, or a joe clock?

What do you guys think? IMHO it is absolutely doable from a financial standpoint
just so long as the joes picked are right and look sorta like the bishop or the knight, etc.

Any ideas for such a setup?

Few years back somebody did a custom set like this....all I remember is it had Serpentor on his Air Chariot as one of the pieces and the board was HUGE.

Rather than produce it specificaly produce figures for a set...or what would be more likely to happen is making a chess set using "mini-figures", I think it'd be more interesting to see just a set of pedistole s made.

If you start from the idea that you'll want to be able to use any 1:18 scale action figure line to play chess you'll need a figure stand with 2 pegs...one for the Vintage heels, and one for modern feet. Just to add a little bit of class you raise those figure stands up pedistool-like each to an appropriate height for whatever piece the stand will represent. And then finally to eliminate any confusion you need to have an embossed or engraved logo representing which piece each pedi-stand will represent.

Then you can sell it to GI Joe, Star Wars, or any other Toy nerd who wants to act all pretentious and pretend they know how to play chess..

Destro always had a GI Joe/Cobra themed chess set in the early Marvel issues.

However I think this would be a better idea for Milton Bradley to do rather than Master Collector. I personally would have ZERO interest in it.

somebody (i forget exactly, might have been JFAK) did a Cobra Commander Bust on a Romanesque pedistal, then finished it to look like a bronze or silver statue... it was/is really cool, and would work as the foundation of a set like this --
now my wheels are turning...

i wouldn't mind a set that had statue types, but i really want full figs that still look like chess pieces with balanced stands.

I think if you go vehicles than yea the board would be too huge
but a board doesn't have to be wood or hard plastic, it could be a high quality vinylish mat or something relatively cheap but sized for whatever they need do to the stands to make a full figure set.

It would REALLLY be sweet.
