| Post subject: | APC - Is it really Amphibious? |
Decided to dust some of my G.I. Joe vehicles today, and in between the coughing and sneezing fits, I found myself vaguely wondering if the APC really does float. I'll admit I've never thought to put the thing into a bathtub or swimming pool or whatever, despite having once since 1983. Anybody...? |

I wanna say it floats better than the first Water Moccasin. As I recall, the axle housings are molded to the lower hull, so the metal axles go through from one wheel to the other, but eventually enough water will get into the area between the lower hull and the seats through the holes for the bumper/handle. Then down she goes. My friend, who had the APC, and I tried it once in the bath tub and it seemed to stay afloat for a good while. |

Also my original Moccasin floated just fine, same with the SHARC. Just couldn't splash it around too much or water would get in the seams and sink 'em. |

I don't ever remembering the APC ever sinking. I had one of my spare APCs in a pool for about a week without it sinking. You could only sink it, if you started putting water into the troop hold. Also it would take some pretty rough waves too without sinking. If I remember correctly from taking one apart the part the figures would stand and sit on had pockets that would trap air, so it didn't matter about the water coming in from the axle holes. I could be wrong though, as it has been a while that I had one apart. momaw nadon |

Somebody should do a scientific study about what the average bathtub splash or swimming pool cannonball dive amounts to wave-wise relative to the scale of G.I. Joe... Probably be the equivalent of more than enough to swamp them in real life. |

From My experience, the holes in the axle area let water into the lower hull, but if you had figures loaded only in the 2 rows of seats...NO MORE THAN THAT...it would float. The water would be right up to the body line where the cab splits. |

I used the APC numberous times in the tub or pool as a kid and the water always got up to the cabin line, but never flooded. I remember it sucked waiting for all the water to drain out, but it worked as advertised. I remember wanting to play with it in the water after I read issue #17 or #18 where it was featured rolling up on a beach. And in case anyone is wondering, the Warthog can float, as well. And contrary to the cartoon, the Sky-Hawk does not float or skim the water at all
