This was posted over on Hisstank. The person posting it said 20+ of them were gray, not sure out of how many and not sure how he has access. Not sure what to make of it either.

Great, a variant for something 1% of collectors are gonna have half a chance to get in the first place. That's AWESOME. : /

Hound looks to be a different color too. I'm guessing the one on the left is a packaging test. I'll be surprised if any of the off colored ones actually make it to people.

This has to be some type of packaging test run or just an error. Hopefully its corrected and no one receives these. That would be a major screw up. I wouldn't even have thought twice about it if the guy didn't post that there were more than twenty like that when someone suggested it was a test run. His profile says he is in China. He also posted a pic of a case of them still unopened.

Awesome. Now I have to remember to open mine and check it before leaving the booth.

I haven't opened my StarScream SkyStriker to compare, but i'm noticing that the engine covers are in place as are the engines and the VAMP looks mostly assembled. Wouldn't all those parts be in separate baggies? Kinda makes me think test packaging.

If it is a packaging test, I can't blame them for making a packaging test. When I saw the inventory of stuff they were offering in this set, one of my first thoughts was "Ye gods, how big is THAT box gonna be!?"

Also of note, but not necessarily significance? The bags in the weird colored one have no text.

Well, recent packaging efforts by Hasbro proves that they can in fact fit 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag. The new Tomahawk's box is remarkably small compared to the assembled vehicle. And FunPub actually asked Hasbro to make the box smaller for the Night Boomer than they did for the Skystriker. Somehow they did just that and shaved off some space. I think we are going find that the box for this set is not going to be as big as we might think. I know we are looking at pictures now and can see, but it is still something else to see in person.

Great. A variant. So the SDCC exclusive quest just went from stupid to crazy stupid.

Information I've seen elsewhere says its preproduction, and shouldn't be at SDCC at all.

While I don't have a Starscream Skystriker to compare, I'd imagine if the Starstriker and Shockwave boxes are the same size (and I believe they are) then this one will be as well to complete the matched set.
