In 1996-97 I remember seeing the Tonka GI Joe offerings at Kaybee toys. At the time I remember thinking they just slapped the GI Joe name on a Tonka truck. Slap in the face! Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and it came up in a google search while looking for GI Joe/Transformers cross over customs. It became must have.

As far as GI Joe vehicles go, it is really basic. Its one major play feature is the working lights and siren (which my daughter loves). The tail gate does fold down and as you can see modern figures do fit inside. To say it has a solid construction is to basically call you stupid. Tonka + pressed steel = Tonka Tough (c)(tm).

The shipping was kind of high so I checked to see what else the seller had. That's wheb I saw the Nylint big rig with a ABC Winter Olympics sports tractor trailer. As a kid I had a couple of Nylint vehicles I had just assumed were Tonka. It looked a bit small but after some research the truck originally came with some Fisher Price Adventure People looking figures and a camera trolly. It was worth adding on to the order if for no other reason than having a Cobra surveillance command center.

Well, it is a bit under scale. Even if the cab was accessable, I not sure I could fit even a female o-ring figure in there. But rest assured, I will be trying.

Image

Modern figures are too tall to sit properly at the consoles in the trailer unless you fudge the angles. O-ring figures are a little too big too but much easier to fit in place. You can see how the Techno Viper's butt isn't wuite touching the couch.

Image

The inner walls have printed details and a wood paneling design. I thought that was a nice touch. The trailer has 3 opening side doors with latches so they can stay closed while the truck is moving. You can also see under the trailer where it has a folding support bar so it can stand alone without the truck.

Image

The outside has tv cable connection sockets. I used some S'getti String tubing (aka replica GI Joe tubes) that fit the sockets perfectly. I threw a Funskool Psyche Out radar gun on top for good measure.

Image

Image

The back of the truck has a cargo door that actually slides up. I thought a Ferret might fit in there but the SNAKE armor laying down or the HISS drone seemed to be better fits.

Yeah, these don't show anything in particular. I just wanted to show you what my wife walked into when she got home. I was having so much fun.

I had a few of those Nylint tractor trailers when I was a kid ,and loved them.
We have a local trucking company (CRST) that use to have them with their logos on them. My mother worked for them, and got some for my brother and I, but I never saw that broadcast trailer version. That is SWEET! I can imagine endless play time with that version.

I'm actually really tempted to look for one now... :shifty:

The first time I saw this semitruck was at Sidewinder's house a few years ago. I bought one on eBay that day (though I haven't done anything with it).

I think what I like best about the trailer is the frame, the doors, the play access thru the top, etc... Which makes me want to know - how easy do you think it would be to gut and replace with pieces more suitable to modern figures?

3 rivets up through the bottom of the metal and into the plastic floor. One by the rear cargo door (top right) and then the two by the console (bottom off centered).

Image

The panel walls are also riveted on. Sorry for the bad angle but if you zoom in you can see it under the shelves on the left.

More pictures, from more angles, makes me want one of these even... more.

I have that ABC truck. I got in when I was in first grade. It is one of only a few toys I still have from my childhood. Mine is in no where near as nice of condition as yours. Apparently as a kid I wanted it to have the a cab that leaned forward like a real cab-over tractor so I bent the tabs on the bottom and at sometime the seats and bed came out, so my cab is now a hallow shell. I have absolutely zero of the accessories, a couple of figures, a camera car, a hand held camera, cables, etc. I had to rebuild the exhaust stacks using a couple of McDonald's straws. I painted the tractor and trailer black and slapped some ARBCO decals on it.
One and only time I ever got straight A's a report card when I was in first grade to be able to get that thing.

The Tonka "Steel Brigade" Joe offerings were interesting, but like the Bruder items, I think they are just too much over scale to work properly.

Many years ago I made attempts to get that Nylint ABC Sports truck off eBay, but I gave up before I was successful. It definitely looks like a cool piece and would be almost perfect if it were better able to fit Joe figures.
