More often than not, I see R n R's gun listed as an M60. However, the barrel is more like an MG42. So much so that the 25th anniversary version is an MG42

So is his gun an M60, MG42, mix of the two, or something else?

It definitely appears to be a hybrid. M60 body with an MG42 barrel. I can't find anything on that actually existing though.

Dengar, IG 88 and Snow Troopers all came with MG42s :-)

Sorry, random fact about that gun...

That image of the Rock n' Roll's 82/83 weapon is most certainly a wierd hybrid...

... But the 25th RnR came with an exact replica of the MG3 (the post-war 7.62mm updated version of the MG42).

MG-42's a good gun to have, but Rock N Roll would need a backpack with extra barrels because that was one of the design elements of the gun, to change barrels when it got too hot.

If the barrel, innards and stock are MG42, it is a MG42, not matter what gets tacked onto the outside.

i'm pretty sure the m60 was based on the mg42 design. very interesting conversation. it would be in the realm of possibility that R-n-R first gun was a modified mg42 a pre-m60 prototype. the newer exact mg42 could be explained by nostalgia for the classic design by R-n-R himself.

I'd say it looks more like an M60 with an MG42 barrel shroud and muzzle added.

The body should really determine the weapon. You can get stocks and barrels and other parts to spice up your rifle, but the main receiver will generally remain the same. You can add M4 stocks to AK' s. You can add handguards, shrouds, and stocks to make an M4 look more like a SCAR, but the receiver (body) is still an M4.

RnR's receiver definitely looks to be an M60.
