I've tried googling it a couple times over the past few years, and haven't found a definitive list. this is my personal delve into collecting as an adult. I was always most interested in the joes who came with a sidekick animal, and they take up very little room. please chime in with a list or additions to what I have here. i'll try to list what I have here from ARAH to ME, but honestly there are a few that i'm not sure. it's possible even a few are not joe at all. any that I don't have, but know of will be in red.

There were two versions of the ARAH Max.
Black from the Night Force Spearhead and Muskrat 2-pack and the orange version, pictured above, from the single carded standard Spearhead figure.

There were also two versions of Max from the ME.
The brown one, in the picture above, was from the Night Force Spearhead and then there was the "Cheetos" orange version from the standard Spearhead.

Sandstorm was also released as Timber for a Snake-Eyes (Toy Fair exclusive?).

i'm not 100% following that past nastification was timbers v1 mold used for a exclusive sandstorm, or was the sandstorm mold used for timber? if so it would be pretty dang small for a wolf!

totally unrelated I used my broken timber v1 for sandstorm in my "dogs of war" set! too bad I painted my v1 order (it was a later issue of the correct color) for that same project

I was so happy when I got an unbroken v1 timber in a huge (100+) animal lot. that was when I decided to collect the joe animals for serious!

It was Sandstorm released as Timber, and you are correct that it was undersized. Didn't really work as Timber. But if you happened to want a recolor of Sandstorm it was okay.

timber is the most difficult to list so far! the NS and early ME share a mold so I put all the color variants in the NS. the ME has 3 other versions that i'm seeing plus some color variants.

so what are the definitive joe figure eras? is it by date of release (con/special sets included) or strictly construction based? s

ay a special edition o-ring joe released well into modern era? or did this never happen? seriously I don't know

At this point, I would group them this way with 4 major eras and 2 in-betweens. Sigma 6 probably deserves noted, but a 3 3/4 or 4" line existed in some way each year that it did, even though it was not huge from half way through 2005-half way through 2007.:

1964-1976 Vintage 12"
1977-1978 SuperJoe
1982-1994 Vintage 3 3/4"
1995-2001 12", Sgt. Savage, Extreme, and a few 3 3/4 items
2002-2006 Commonly called the "new sculpt" era. As James Kavanaugh mentions, we should have just called this Gen 2.
2007-2017 Commonly called the "modern era." As James Kavanaugh mentions, we should have just called this Gen 3.
