We all knew Devils' Due was losing the license for the comics, and it would appear #36 is the last issue. Received images of the comic covers for #36, and this was one of them...

A definite homage to issue #155.

Somehow I am cheering

I don't mean to be a smart alek to those who enjoyed the run, I am just not one of them.

I was really enjoying this. I've read every issue, and I think it's been really firing on all cylinders since the writer change. I actually enjoy the artwork quite a bit as well. It was different, and not so "Image". Here's hoping whomever gets this keeps up the good stuff.
I'm not really excited about the prospect of a complete reboot, or even a reboot from where Marvel left off.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed the Devil's Due run.*

*With the exception of Joe Casey's tenure, which was devoid of character research, strongly lacking in Cobra-related characters, and terribly bleak.

At least this cover doesn't have dead and/or evil characters present in the ceremony....

This is such a bumber, but it is a fitting tribute to 155. I really enjoyed WWIII and the guys at DD were so cool.

Homage...ripoff...whatever. :)

Can't say I really care one way or another. They lost me as a reader almost immediately and never offered any reasons to go back. But, that will be the case with any comic these days I suppose.

Well, they had 43 issues of DD part one, 18 issues of Frontlines, and this will make 36 issues of Elite; add in a bunch of one shots and limited series and they probably will end up clocking in at over 100 issues total. That's impressive for a comic that so many folks say they don't like.

Everyone complains about all the characters DD killed off. Who besides Lady Jaye was worth a damn? I think killing off Jaye was a great idea. It gave Flint more character and brought him outta Duke's shadow. If they were given more of a chance I think sometime in the near future Duke would have replaced Hawk and Flint replaced Duke. Of course all the DD haters would have moaned and groaned. God help us if something in a comic book changes once in 25 years.

I'm hoping the future of the book is still up in the air. Covers are made months in advance, maybe DD went ahead with this cover in a just in case scenario.

It's not that it changes, it's that it changed in real arbitrary ways. None of the character deaths were really important to the story, except Lady Jaye. They were very obviously, "Hey, look! We're killing characters! Better buy this issue!" ploys. And I'm going to argue with "gave flint character." Flint already had character, what DD did with Lady Jaye's death turned Flint into some pansy-assed Frank Castle wannabe. And on a tangent, I'm sick of hearing the, "In war people die!" excuse to justify the huge body count in the DD series. Yes, people die in war. And people died in the original series, too. But when they did, it was usually for plot-based reasons, not just, "Hey, our sales are sagging...." And they were able to tell good, engaging stories without killing off named, toy-based characters left and right (seriously, look at how long the original comic went on before a non-comic-exclusive character died). Half of the fun of GI Joe is the expansive cast of characters, even if most of them only get cameo roles. When writers start looking at everyone who isn't a main character as cannon-fodder, they really lose connection to part of what makes people love the Joe franchise.

For the record, though, I have really enjoyed this last leg of America's Elite, and I liked the first few arcs of the original DD version, too. I think that if DD had started with the quality that they are at now, there wouldn't be as many people complaining.

With the way this has played out, I'm wondering if we're going to be without a comic for a while, until the movie gets closer. That would be a bummer.

I dont remember reading that on any covers like I did in the Marvel Run.

Hah. Nice job insulating your list from criticism by including people Marvel killed. A much better list would have been one of just DD's victims. And to partially answer your charge, if you don't see at LEAST Recondo (along with two or three others) on that list as being a major character, I suspect your involvement with Joe does not stretch back to 83-84, when 'Condo and the new Joes were all the rage on my side of the playground.

To be clear: I'm not calling you out on age or anything you can't control (a sign of jerkism), I'm trying to show you what you consider a minor loss is a major deal to us.

And I'm gonna go ahead and whizz in the Cheerios of the Hama worshippers: I'm still cranky he killed Quick-Kick, Doc and Breaker. The others not so much, but damn dude. Breaker? That's just mean.
