Can someone tell me about the character of Shooter? I was just looking at Toy-Nut's custom and realized I don't know that much about her. Here's what I do know:

*Retroactively changed from being a male seen in a "cameo" on a computer screen in Marvel's #1 to a female in GI Joe: Declassified a year or so ago.

*Sniper.

*Died before the events in Marvel #1?

Thanks.

I believe the actual story is that an inker/letterer included Jim Shooter's name on the roster list in place of a blank space as an in-joke at Marvel. Of course, GIJoe fans like any big fandom made a big deal so the "mysterious" Shooter became the topic of many discussions, customs and whatnot...

So Larry Hama threw him/her in the canon.

It's essentially like the yellow Seeker (jet) in the first episode of the Transformers cartoon who was later given a name and personality by Takara (and later, Hasbro/Dreamwave). He was just there, people noticed him, officials decided to flesh him out.

pn, what you know about her is pretty much all there is to know...

I forgot, how'd she die again? I know it was on a rescue mission but I can't remember what the details were.

She was sent in advance of the other Joes to the island where Cobra took Dr. Burkhart. As the Joes took off in the captured heli, a Cobra AA emplacement took aim on them. They were also using civilians as ammo haulers, which kept Shooter from sniping the Cobras. She engaged the Cobras hand to hand, freed the civilians, but was caught in the exploding castle IIRC.

At YoJoe.com in the preproduction and unproduced archive under Misc. they have concept art for a Cobra sniper named Shooter. It's not in color of course but it's actually an interesting looking character.

Male obviously, has a backpack that his rifle seems to be attached to and of course the standard Cobra faceplate. The gun is controlled I am guessing by the hand control in his right hand. Basic camo pattern, dark triangles, maybe an early attempt at urban camo?

I am actually working on a custom of the figure in grays, blacks and cobra blues.

I've always assumed that this was a Marvel in-joke nod to then editor Jim Shooter. Someone realized the artwork showed fourteen screens and they only had thirteen Joes at the time (hardly a problem anymore!)

The "retcon" story was cool, though. No complaints about that.

At the time, Jim Shooter was Editor in chief of Marvel Comics, and the name was an in joke. Somebody actually won a no-prize for it. He is REALLY hated by a lot of people, as he is blamed for the onset of six-title, fifteen issue crossovers that required you to buy usually unrelated titles to get the entire story. He also headed up the tragic "New Universe."

For a laugh, if you haven't already, find and read comic called "Fred Hembeck destroys the Marvel Universe."

My favorite "new" character since the relaunch. So full of awesomeness that I disregard the story's denouement. I still imagine her running around East Africa sniffing out extremists and tracking down Terror Drome shipments.

The odd thing is that he also didn't want multi-part stories WITHIN any given title unless they were tied into one of these epic crossovers. He's the reason John Byrne left the Captain America title after such a short run. Byrne had a story in mind that would've brought back the Red Skull, but it would've been like a three or four part story, and Shooter decided out of the blue that he didn't want to see anything more than two-parters. So Byrne told Shooter where he could stuff Cap's shield, so to speak.

As for the G.I.Joe character Shooter, I also wonder if her design was a bit of a nod to the concept artwork for the black female character that was proposed as a figure at one point. That artwork has turned up at a number of Conventions. Shooter wasn't an exact likeness for the character (the artwork for which always struck me as looking like a black Lady Jaye), but I do wonder about it... :shifty:
