This week's profile is more subdued as it takes a look at a figure that you don't see all that often, but that collectors also don't care much about. The 1991 Dusty is a solid figure with great accessories. But, is he really a great update to the original Dusty? http://www.forgotten-figures.com/joe/91dusty.htm Enjoy! |

I actually like this version more than v1. The '85 version is literally too square for me and that goofy face is laughable Still not sure about the bare arms of '91 though. |

As always, good writing. I had two problems with this figure: 01. The face looked nothing like the somewhat goony face of the original. While the face for the newer Dusty was more normal looking in its appearance, I've always believed that it's okay to throw a few "real" faces into the mix. Not everyone on the street looks beautiful, and that should be represented in a toy line. 02. The beret falls on the wrong side of the face. How hard was that for someone to notice during the design phase of the figure? "Hey, Gary, that should go the other way!" I was recently watching a Military Channel or History Channel program about the French Foreign Legion. They apparently wear berets which drape to the person's left side of the face. So, if nothing else, there's an excuse to make a custom. Aside from the arms and beret, everything on this figure was really nice. |

The arms always bugged me on this guy. That and the bright red hair. Bare arms in the desert... not a good idea. The bright red hair always made me think of Ronald McDonald. Sand Storm bugged me to. The occasional pet is ok, but a desert coyote for a pet? Kinda lame. Nostalgia still keeps the original Dusty high on my list. |

I love this verson of Dusty, although I never had one. I had some of the re-paints of it however and really got a good idea on the mold and seen it several times (but never for sale). The one thing that might keep it from being my default though is I just love the face paint on V1. Kind of goofy but really adds something to him. |

Very nice writeup on a figure that I wasn't too familiar with. It seems like a decent figure, and even a pretty good update to Dusty, but the '85 version was perfect to me. Other than giving the '85 version a reomovable helmet, I don't think Dusty really needed an updated look. I find it interesting that you state a red headed Joe was a rarity. I have always thought the Joe line had an abnormally large red headed population. Just off the top of my head, you've got Wild Bill, Ace, Scarlett, Thunder, Crankcase, Deep Six, Outback, Snow Job, Cross Country, Charbroil, etc. I'm sure there is a few more. |

Quote: Hasbro was wont to keep their most recognizable names fresh. Second line of your review. "was wont" should probably be "wanted". Back to the review. A good read like usual. I like this version too, but hate the red hair. If it was a whole new character it works and I wouldn't be so bothered. --> Just an edit. My bad on the "was wont". was wont = was accustomed. I initially read it as was won't. |

I certainly share your love for the mold and especially the green paint job on the parachute figure! Also his gun with pull out stock and backpack were two great accessories. Granted we've seen more of that backpack than we'd like to by now, but back then it was a fast favorite. The Collectors edition Dusty with the blue shirt and red beret has been my favorite travel figure (Green dusty is still in the packaging) - that CE Dusty has been in my bag everywhere from Hawaii to Long Island, Orlando to Seattle. -CJack |
