According to Forbes.com, Hasbro has reacquired distribution rights to the Sunbow library.

Great news for cartoon fans!

Looks like with the movies release coming, they're wising up and looking to go all out with everything they can.

Excellent news.

Awesome. I hope if they release them, they start from the beginning. The first season was already released by Kid Rhino, or whoever, right? I missed out on them and would love to get the whole series.

I wonder if those cartoon packs with the Build a Mass Device had anything to do with this. Mor elikely it is the movie, but I wonder if they saw a need to have the rights to their cartoons back based on some fo the orders for those packs.

Indeedy... Those Rhino releases will become worthless once *someone* starts releasing new ones. Probably moreso than the Transformers sets, since people with Transformers at least have a full set. But for people looking to get both these series in similar, full DVD releases (or Blue-Ray, even better!) this is definitely the starting point for good news.

Rhino released 3 boxed set, comprising the entire 1st season, and most of the 2nd season. The final set wasn't released before they lost the license, and for years some fans have been clamoring for the series to be "finished", not really understanding that if a new company actually coughs up the money to secure the license (which they would now be negotiating directly with Hasbro), it would make no financial sense to only release the second half od the 2nd Season...

*Of Course* they're going to start back and the beginning! Especially after all these years, and as out-of-print as the Rhino sets are... have no worry, fans like you and I will have our shot at the full series, starting from the beginning!

I'm with lococaca. I think I'm going to sell all mine now and then re-buy them when the newer ones come out.

They'll most likely toss on "something" extra to get those of us that bought the first few box sets all over again.

Toy Commercials perhaps? Hmmmmm

From what I understand, this still won't make it any easier for us to get DVD sets, or to get DVDs with more fan-friendly extras. Before, DVD publishers needed to apply with TV-Loonland for the licence to make DVDs from Sunbow's catalogue, but the final say came from Hasbro if they were Hasbro's properties (like GI Joe).

So what's changed now is DVD makers need to talk to Hasbro directly, and what the DVDs contain or when they are released are still down to whomever buys the rights from Hasbro. Hasbro is just consolidating its holdings and continuing its aim of becoming a properties company that also makes toys, rather than just a toy company.

What may change is that we might see more pack-in DVDs with toys.

I could definitely see a renewed emphasis on the DVDs as we get closer to the movie's release. I think the success of 'Transformers' has emboldened Hasbro. I wouldn't be surprised if we got new Transformers dvds around the time of the release of Transformers 2. Hopefully without all the KidRhino errors

What about the DiC cartoons?

I don't speak for myself, but I'm sure the fandom as a whole would say:

"Whoever has them... can keep 'em!"

Personally, I'd buy the DIC series, and Extreme... I was a fan of both, grew up with both, and never got to see the second half of the latter series.

I expect few people (except a few fanatics) would agree with me.

You are correct. This is your own brand of nutty. Sunbow all the way, yo.
