How would you end the battle between Joe and Cobra?

Gigantic land, air and sea battle that takes about a month or so to wrap up, with major casualties on both sides. And perhaps even a major city destoryed in the process.

Taken out from within by one of their own. Abused, mocked, and disaffected, OverKill goes off on his own for a few years and develops a 'sleeper BAT' (similar to the iRobots from the crummy Will Smith flick) that he sends out into the world to kill, skin, and assume the identity of random people.

Once critical mass is achieved, they synchronized and go berserck all at once, killing some 99.6% of Humanity within a few short weeks.

Horrible sales due to poor distribution and people start getting tired of hunting for figures and stop collecting. Eventually the line dies...... Oh you didn't mean how is Hasbro messing up that could result in ending the line? Hehe.

No the story of G.I.Joe and how it could wrap up, I'd never "end it". If sales were so low that nobody collected anymore and it was time for G.I.Joe to be put away, I'd never finalize it.

What I'd end up doing is have things lead up with a huge battle. You'd have to have some deaths on both sides, but it would have to be done so in ways that meant something. I don't know who or how, but there's better ways to do it than what Devils Due has done. I might would go one of 2 ways, Cobra Commander being captured or "killed". It could be done in a way where Cobra is so defeated and G.I.Joe forces come in to capture Cobra Commander but he pulls a gun and ends up getting shot. In the final pages of the comic as G.I.Joe is going their separate ways you see a shadowed hooded figure making a speech about "some day the rise of Cobra will come again", etc. Of course that leaves it open that Cobra Commander wasn't the one shot but a double. Or just have him captured so a future revive can have him break out.

There's many ways to do it, but you can't ever 100% end it. Even if sales were so low that it had to be put away, there's always some time later that it can always be brought back. It's better to give a chance to pick up where it left off than to force a reboot.

When I was a kid it ended with Shockwave and Static Line flying a Locust into the sunset.

Silent issue, black and white, lots of custard pies, and Cobra Commander taken down by the Keystone Cops.

I always figured it would end on Cobra Island in a massive offensive by GI Joe to get rid of Cobra once and for all. Like th original ending of Apocalypse Now.

A large battle which culminates with the capture of Cobra Commander. Joes get meddles there is a ceremonywith much Pomp and circumstance. But as the new president takes office it cuts to one of his speech writes folding his crimson guard uniform and hanging it in the closet next to his loaded fin fal. The Joes are transfered to different bases as the Pitt is slowly decommissioned and Hawk sits on a desk as Sparks is closing personal files.Then an urgent message indication pops up on his screen. Cut to (each in separate panels) Duke, Stalker, Scarlet and Snake Eyes, Clutch, Wild Bill, Gung Ho, and Flint (standing on Lady jayes Grave) answering their cell phones. knowing that another threat has reemerged but the tale of Joe vrs Cobra has ended.
Its one of those "the price of freedom is Constant vigilance" themes

One word: ALIENS

In the very near future (like less than a year from now) a Cobra space unit attempting to sabotage/hijack an international communications satellite picks up a faint signal coming from somewhere between Earth and Mars. Back on Earth, over the course of 2 or so years Dr. Mindbender decodes and translates the message revealing it to be a communication between an advance scout craft from an alien civilization and it's mothership who are peacefully searching for signs of other intelligent life in the universe. Cobra then begins attempting to communicate with these extraterrestrials eventually leading them to Earth. Cobra Commander hopes to aquire their technology either through trade/cooperation or even outright killing the travellers and stealing or reverse engineering it for themselves.

The aliens make it to Earth, revealing themselves to be something other than the peaceful explorers they claimed they were in their communications with Cobra. They are actually an advance flotilla for a galaxy spanning empire of conquerers known as the Lunatrix. The Lunatrix are a covenant of several different species on a holy crusade to conquer the Universe in the name of their Phrophets. They quickly destroy Cobra Island from orbit and begin their attack on the Earth itself, laying wast to several large cities with their first volley. The Lunatrix lay waste to everything in their path with their advanced starfighters, laser weapons, monstrous alien warbeasts, and various natural abilities of the various species that make up the Lunatrix.

The assorted surviving human forces rally behind the Joes and begin to fight back but only begin to really make any progress when they are joined by Destro and M.A.R.S., who have been developing advanced weaponry based on captured Lunatrix technology (including a craft that crashed in the Antarctic in the early 1980's). Several surviving Cobras (such as Zartan and his Dreadnoks, Scrapiron, etc.) join the battle as well.

The Lunatrix begin their occupation of the Earth utilizing genetically modified humans (adapted from their captives and slave stock from the initial attacks) as their basic ground troops so as not to waste any of their own troopers. It is revealed that Major Bludd has betrayed all of humanity and leads the Lunatrix ground forces against his own kind since humanity is doomed and the Lunatrix pay for his services in addition to ensuring that he (and a personally chosen harem which includes a few captured Joes) will survive and live in luxury as part of the Lunatrix Empire. Shape-shifting Lunatrix begin infiltrating any pockets of human survivers that they encounter fostering a growing sense of paranoia, no one trusts anyone anymore. Society begins to totally break down.

As things look darkest for mankind, a new hope dawns as another alien species hunted to near extinction by the Lunatrix make their presence known to the human resistance. They offer to temporarily bond themselves to human hosts granting them access to their powers and abilities as their physical bodies were too withered to fight the Lunatrix on their own. Several Joes, Cobras, and even Destro himself offer themselves as hosts for these benevolent alien lifeforms. These newly powered hybrids lead their fellow survivors in a final assault against their cruel oppressors.

After massive battles across the entire surface of the Earth, in low orbit, and aboard the Lunatrix mothership on the dark side of the moon, the combined Earth forces drive off the Lunatrix after a long and bloody war lasting over 5 years. The Lunatrix retreat out beyond Jupiter. The benevolent aliens finally wither and die having aided humanity in gaining their freedom from the Lunatrix, doing something they never could for their own people. After having united as a species, petty things such as borders and idealogies are put aside and humanity begins the long task of rebuilding a battered and burned earth.

I would have figured it would end as the Joes learned about a secret meeting of Cobra Leaders (CC, Destro, Baroness, Mindbender, ect...) and the battle begins and finally comes to an end when a self destruct button is pushed and the Cobra leaders and Joes go up in a Mushroom cloud, without no leaders, the rest of the Cobra factions fall one by one until they are all gone, then the remaining Joes go to be special prison guards and or retire or assume other duties in the military.

I once wrote a short story that took place in a few decades about an aged Cobra Commander in a wheelchair in a long abandoned Terror Drome on CObra Island. By this point Cobra is a peaceful nation, long accepted in the world. CC dies peacefully in the wheelchair.

But that has no pizzazz so a warlike ending is needed.

Fast forward roughly 5-6 years. In that time Cobra has invaded and subdued several Central and South American nations. The USA has had it's hands tied by the UN and the EU and hasn't been able to stop Cobra except by small pinprick attacks using GI Joe. Cobra's military has grown and grown to the point that it numbers almost 3 million men under arms.

April 12, 2014 Cobra forces launch an all out invasion of Mexico with an eye to having a long and barely defended jumping off point into the USA. Nearly 2 thirds of their military is committed to the invasion and within weeks most of Mexico has fallen. The northern parts of Mexico hold out bolstered by a hastily thrown together international coalition of UN countries. America is strangely quiet at this point and has committed no forces to the defense of Mexico.

May 18, 2014 Cobra Island residents awake that morning to the sight of 3 carrier groups of the US Navy. Due to the number of troops CC has sent into Mexico and is using to hold down his Central South American holdings, Cobra Island is thinly defended and falls within 8 hours.

May 23rd, 2014 Elements of the US Pacific and Atlantic fleets land Marine and Army divisons in Panama and they set about seizing control of the country and the canal, working towards each other through the country.

Over the coming months Cobra is driven into a hasty retreat from Mexico in an attempt to stop the attacking American forces. During this time GI Joe has not been seen and CC has all his agents out trying to find out where they are.

September 2014 Cobra is being defeated and pushed back from almost all of the territory it conquered in the previous 5 years. CC has attempted several times to retake Cobra Island with no success. His ambassadors pleas for help fall on deaf ears throughout the world and at the UN.

October 2014 A dozen Cobra stealth bombers slip through American air defenses and drop tactical nuclear weapons on 3 american cities before they are shot down by fighters. Dallas, Jacksonville and Miami are all almost totally destroyed. The world is stunned by this use of nuclear force. Extremist groups throughout the world cheer on Cobra and a wave of terror attacks on American holdings around the world ensues.

December 2014 America has still not retaliated against Cobra with it's own nuclear weapons and the world holds its breath. American military forces have been pulled out of their attacks against Cobra and pulled back to defend the country and aid in the care of wounded and horrified civilians. Cobra Commander once more sits on the throne in his palace on Cobra Island. His recruiters are working overtime throughout the world to replenish his armies diminished ranks. Still no sign of GI Joe.
