Post subject:  M.A.S.H. Playset Questions

http://www.toymania.com/334archives/mash/base.htm

I have this in the box with all the unpunched trees. It has some neat dio pieces like the record player, tables, benches, barrels, ect.

My first question is would anyone want to use this cast pieces for dios? My next question is would this cause a C&D or any legal issues, (as far as I can tell the company does not exist anymore, but I could be wrong)? Finally my next question is if there was interest and no legal issues would it be better to cast them on the trees or loose?

I have had this a while and meant to get around to finding this stuff out but never got to it until now. I pulled it out of storage and was looking at it, when my wife of all people keeps bugging me to put it together. If there is no interest I am inclined to let her tear into it with her Dad (a big M.A.S.H. fan) and my daughter.

Either way I will scan the sticker sheet to put in the archives if anyone is interested in it. It is nice as it is on a 8 1/2 X 11 sheet but the graphics reflect the time........

From what i have heard, repro parts are "illegal" to sell outright, BUT if you put them on Ebay, it's legal ??????? So, if ya was to get them casted, put them on Ebay, i would get some.

Could you cast enough to satisfy orders before people got fed up with your offerings and went to sombody with a better inventory.

Can you make them cheap enough? Not to get into how cheap joe fans are again...but we're a mizerly bunch...can your castings be made and sold cheaper than the dio accessories that I can get from Marauder Inc? Are there any unique parts in the MASH set worth a premium?

The things that get casters in trouble are large volumes and using copywritten names. If you do cast these items...I don't think you can get away with using the MASH playset name...but calling them generic dio accessories might work.

There's really only legal issues to worry about if there's somebody that feels they're being infringed upon. If the toy company's no longer in existence, I'd say that leaves you open to dupe it all if you want. The only thing I'd stay away from is using any 'M.A.S.H.' terminology in your sales descriptions or discussions. Just call it 'Military Hospital' and the like.

And yes; I'd think there'd be a LOT of interest in 18th scale surgical gear. A LOT of interest.

Can you take pics? The one you linked to pretty much blows, what with everythign being piled into the box.

Hmmm.....I never was thinking about profits. I just thought it might be cool to let someone who had the casting abilities have a crack at it so others could use them. If they were to sell them to cover thier costs I could understand it. I just thought it might be a good idea to preserve some neat peices. I do not want to violate any laws in the process though :/. I thought that if the copyrights expired (which they may have here) it was fair game, but I have no real expertise in this area so your insight is appreciated to keep things legit.

I did not see any surgical gear, but a lot of camp stuff like bunks, tables, ect.

I'll see if I can get some better pics now, gimmie a sec.

I say go for it. You're not doing it on a massive scale, just reproing some stuff. Companies in the army man field do it all the time, making copies of old Marx molds from the 50s.

If you're not going to sell them, I'm pretty sure you can cast away(no pun intended). If the toy company is out of business, it's free reign unless someone else bought the rights.

I took some pics which I will try to edit in. Here is the list of small accessories from the instructions.

1. Pot belly stove.................................17. Sign post stand
2. Pot belly stove pipe..........................18. Sign post directional signs(9)
3. Water Barrels (3).............................19. Lounge chair seat
4. Foot Lockers (4)...............................20. Lounge chair backrest
5. Single book case..............................21. Lounge chair legs
6. Gas cans ( 3)...................................22. Office chair seat
7. Book Shelves...................................23. Office chair backrest
8. Hospital Lamps................................24. Mess tables (4-Large)
9. Phonograph.....................................25. Benches (8)
10. Typewriter......................................26. Door supports (8)
11. Radio..............................................27. Chess table
12. Pole (Basketball court)...................28. Typewriter table
13. Basketbal backboard......................29. Head post (6-bed)
14. Basketball hoop..............................30. Bed (6)
15. Pole stand.......................................31. Foot post (6-bed)
16. Sign post pole..................................32. Packing crates (4)

The set does a decent job of capturing the atmosphere of M.A.S.H. and the typewriter, radio, and phonograph are really detailed. The benches and tables are all nice, but other sets have had these. The nice thing about these are they are much longer to accomidate several joes at once. The PTE barrels and boxes are much better, however these look more the part for the era IMO. The beds are just O.K. They molded in the covers and pillows and are a little wide.....I might just be used to seeing narrow ones.......

The pics were much higher res, I just am not sure how to keep photobucket from cropping them down.....

I know that some of these parts have been casted already... Because I have some of them. I got the record player, the speaker, and some other small stuff. Pretty cool pieces.

That answers my question best, as it means someone already acomplished my purpose in preserving and allowing others to get them. So unless someone really wants to cast a set, I'll let the wife crack them open next weekend (this ones all booked up :) )

That is one sweet playset. Somewhere I have the ambulance, but I think it's been painted fire engine red.

As a M*A*S*H fan, I am soooo jealous you have that.

Post subject:  Re: M.A.S.H. Playset Questions

ok so here is the skinny on these mash pieces,
I have made molds of the record player intercom radio thing typewriter
and I think thats it from that set, I aquired the set from James desimone he said it
would find the best home with me, and I asked him how much he wanted for it, and he said nothin, I was stoked, I have not made molds of the complex stuff however, I have wanted for a long time to make molds of the bench seats so I could have benches for the transport trucks I had a while back, but never got around to them. So I have not really put them on the website just out of pure laziness, but I have given out lots of castings of these things as freebees with my clothes, and have sold a few at shows, but I see more of a draw from the ww2 guys but even there they dont get really jazzed about civilian gear.

I dont know of any of that makes sense, but if you tackle some of the larger pieces like the cool basic chair and the adarondac type chair that would be sought after,
I know a while back beav sold his mash set and we had a similar discussion,
Im here to help if you have any casting questions,

I think some of the jcers here have my contraband casting!! :shifty: :shifty: :whistling:
;-)

I owned the set myself and sold it to someone who said they were going to cast the pieces too. Hopefully they'll get around to that since it's been a few years ago. I was hoping to get a few of those items as well. The hospital beds were awesome.
