It's very hard to put into words, at times, when you are talking about an icon. She was the quintessential girl next door. She was Mary Ann. She was our Mary Ann. Like many of you, I was raised on watching Gilligan's Island. I can't think of a time when I didn't know about the show. I was able to get all three seasons on DVD awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed watching the zany adventures of our favorite castaways. I also managed to snag the only DVD copy of 'Surviving Gilligan's Island: The Incredibly True Story of the Longest Three-Hour Tour in History' from the local Hollywood Video when they went out of business. It was a docudrama with Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson. Ginger didn't want anything to do with the production. Dawn Wells was a beautiful woman, and even recent pictures reflected that. She might have been typecast as Mary Ann, but I never heard her speak negative about it. Let's face it, given the Mary Ann character, a true wholesome young woman, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Man has always argued, 'Ginger or Mary Ann'. It was always Mary Ann... Thank you for the many years of entertainment. RIP Dawn Wells |

Aside from the "Ginger or Mary Ann" side of it, this reminded me of the passing of Carrie Fisher and Kenny Rogers (two quick examples) - celebrities from my youth that, when you heard their names, it made you smile for a variety of reasons. Then, when you hear of their passing, it does hit you in a unique way. RIP. |
