Final Thoughts and Pics

As a bonus, Lifeline_MD has once again contributed his time and writing talents and created a short story set in the Resurgence universe. You can read part 1 here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-fan-fiction/407707-g-i-joe-resurgence-issue-2-operation-desert-swarm.html#post4860126

Day 31: Final Thoughts

Well, we have reached the end of this second chapter of our Resurgence saga. We hope everybody found something that they enjoyed in this latest outing.

We had a lead time of close to a year, which greatly helped up flesh out the storyline and the ideas behind it. Part 1 was brainstormed in December of 2013, and grew to a monster by the time we unveiled it in July 2014. We had no intention of making it as large as it was, but it kept snowballing into something bigger. With part 2, the extra 6 months was very helpful. With as much lead time, we wanted to avoid burning out, so we all worked on side projects. We have found that this keeps us interested and coming back with a fresh perspective.

In many ways, Part II was very similar to part I. We structured our project around a mock product line complete with filecards, catalogs and packaging, we emphasized new characters over older ones and we tried to keep GI Joe colorful, fun and a bit cheesy like the original toy line.

However, we also wanted to grow as customizers, push the project to be better and more complete as well as create a stronger supporting Resurgence fictional universe. We spent more time developing the storyline to accompany our customs. This was told using the various texts and blurbs and of course the filecards that were lovingly crafted by Raptor and GITrekker. Without them, our figures would not have become fully realized characters. They breathed the spark of life into our customs and this is just as important as choosing parts or colors for a custom. Thanks guys, this project is not possible without you.

Sam raised the bar for his packaging mock-ups once again. He managed to inject the box fronts with a sense of action and adventure, color and texture as well as a modern take on nostalgia and he did it for every one of our main line figures and vehicles. Every. Single. One. Thank you Sam for enriching this project with your talent.

A special thanks goes out to our "guest stars" Ozzie92, JoeMichaels70 and Keep It Clean Customs for creating some awesome pieces as well as DanoftheDead for crafting the fantastic catalogs.

Finally, thanks to all those who followed us on these boards or Facebook. Whether you checked us out everyday, peeked in once in a while, left feedback or not, we truly appreciate the fact that you took the time to do so. We grow and learn as customizers thanks to feedback and support. Thank you.

All in all, projects like these make us feel like we are playing GI Joes as grown men. We get got to make them, come up with a story for them, with help from Raptor and Trekker, and then have an epic battle at the end. See you guys next year for part 3.

Resurgence II - Introduction

GI Joe: Resurgence
''Following the disastrous events of Operation Waterfront where several Joes were taken prisoner by Cobra, General Hawk has tasked Chuckles to put together a team to locate and rescue his men. Meanwhile, a new group of GI Joe recruits are tasked with finding out what Cobra’s new plan is. Little do they know that both missions will lead them to Gold Springs, a nice little town in the desert…''

GI Joe: Resurgence II brings back famous GI Joe members from all eras and introduces many new faces to the team. It also marks the debut of an all-new type of Cobra army, one that is bent on World domination! Collect them all and create your own battles.''

When Bucky, Dusty79, GITrekker and Oreobuilder started revealing our project called GI Joe: Resurgence in July of 2014, we wanted to do something as different as possible. We wanted to capture the lighting in a bottle that the original line had, with unique looking characters, a fun storyline and different personalities for each of them. The idea was to mimic an 80's toy line release, with multiple specialties and new figures. The response was overwhelmingly positive, so we decided to do it all again. This time, we are building from what we did in:

GI Joe: Resurgence (Part 1): http://oreobuildersblog.blogspot.ca/201 ... chive.html
Operation Waterfront: http://oreobuildersblog.blogspot.ca/201 ... gence.html

Our storyline picks up after these events. We approached part II with the following goals:
- To create new characters
- Expand the role of a few key characters from part 1
- To bring back some old favorites
- Keep a GI Joe style military feel with some sci-fi/fantasy elements
- Create a variety of cool vehicles
- Recreate a strong sense of nostalgia by structuring our creations and project as if they were an actual product line.

For part II, Sam Panico is back to create all the packaging for our mock toy line. Raptor has joined GITrekker to write file cards for all our new recruits and breathe life into these characters, with G1Trekker designing the filecards. Keep It Clean Customs, JoeMichaels70 and Ozzie join us as ''special guest stars''.

Resurgence II will start on July 1st and will reveal a new custom everyday for the whole month. We hope you guys enjoy this second chapter. Comments, critiques and questions are always welcome.

We aim to capture the color, the personality, and the fun of the toy line that made us fans as children.

This is our attempt at that.

This is GI Joe:Resurgence

From the desk of Bucky:
Strong Arm: I wanted to do an updated Sgt. Slaughter that wasn't Sarge himself. My initial thought was to make the new Joe trainer a lean fighter type guy like the light heavyweights in MMA. After some discussion with the guys, I started a build that was a big guy. I wanted him to stand out, and if he's no bigger than all the other Joes, he'd get lost in the shuffle. I found some inspiration in Brock Lesnar, and the look is kind of based off Brock when he was sporting a flattop and a beard. I kept swapping parts around until I found a build that looked large and looked proportionate. I originally had Retaliation Roadblock arms on him. I could not get the elbow joints to not chip, and after many unsuccessful attempts, found a way around it by making it look as though he's wearing a workout shirt. Dusty79 provided me with the decal for the chest. I asked for "no pain no gain" and he sent me several different ones to choose from, and the muscle guy was my favorite. Hypnohustler recommended doing something to the upper body to break up the black when he saw the figure at Joecon. The red white and blue harness is a result of his advice.

Parts used:
Head-road pig
Torso and lower arms-retaliation roadblock
Upper arms-50th Destro
Legs-retaliation roadblock

Landmine & Sniffer - Single carded figure

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
A realistic explosives ordnance disposal specialist has been on my to-do list for a while now. Landmine finally came about when I bought a True Heroes vehicle at Toys R Us. The figures from that line aren’t great, but the head was well rendered and was useful for this project. I had the idea of including the dog after seeing an episode of NCIS that featured Marine EOD canines. Some of my favorite classic figures included animal partners, so it was a good opportunity to do the same here.

Head: True Heroes
Torso, arms: 25th Blowtorch
Legs: 30th Hazard Viper
Vest: PoC Skydive

''Cobra is back! ''Cobra Commander's plan to capture Duke has failed. GI Joe has rescued their first sergeant and destroyed Cobra's jungle fortress. Beaten, but not destroyed, Cobra has retreated to lick their wounds and plan their next move. From the desk of Bucky:
Kobura Kai:
Early in the winter I was trying to think of some specialty type that Cobra didn't have. I couldn't think of much. While browsing my figures, I came across the samurai Destro that Joemichaels70 made for me during a contest a couple of years back. Cobra didn't have a samurai, so I contemplated ripping up the custom and making one. I didn't want too at first, but I could not resist doing it. Between the Budo base and the samurai parts from a marvel figure, it came together quickly. I chose the name as a reference to the 80's karate kid movies.

Parts Used:
Budo Torso and Arms
Snake Eyes Legs
Marvel Universe Helmet, and Feet
New Sculpt Destro Head

From the desk of Dusty79:
The latest HISS tank from Hasbro has been made into an airframe many times. I have seen VTOL craft, helicopters, and jets and it seems to work well in any aircraft setup. I really wanted to make my own version and make it a formidable attack jet. I had an Avengers Quinjet that I took the wings and tail from and fused them onto the HISS tank base. An old Conquest provided the landing gear and then I added some bits and pieces for weapons and tech detail. I thought it looked like a vampire bat with the nose guns being fangs, so the name came from trying to blend the Firebat name into vampire bat. The Vector-Viper is my idea of a futuristic Cobra pilot.

Parts used:

Vector-Viper
Torso-50th Night Viper
Legs-30th Techno-Viper with 30th Sci-Fi wires attached
Helmet is modded from a Star Wars B-Wing pilot helmet, 30th Sci-Fi helmet, and 25th Cobra Paratrooper
Webgear is modded from 25th Cobra Paratrooper and bits of fodder
Arm winglets are from 25th Cobra Paratrooper

Vampyrebat
Crimson HISS body
Cast Gatling gun barrels
Wings and tail from Avengers Quinjet
Missiles from Cobra Mamba
Engine from Anakin podracer
Landing gear from Conquest X-30
Various bits of fodder for tech detail

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
Late in the project, one of us (raptor I believe) asked if Resurgence had ever included a Snake Eyes figure. Resurgence is mostly about introducing new blood. However, it is also about giving new looks to some old favorites, so I set about trying to refresh Snake Eyes. I started from a point where he is retired, worn out. I imagined that he is forced to come out of retirement after the events of Operation: Waterfront when the Iron Master gets captured by Cobra. Basically, this is my version of Snake Eyes as Yoda.

Head: PoC Snake Eyes
Alt head: RoC The Doctor with Snake Eyes visor attached
Torso, arms, legs, hood: Ret Kamakura
Skirt: RoC Storm Shadow
Cape: Darth Vader

From the desk of Bucky:
Nega Watt is a creation of Joecustoms member Joemichaels70, who won second place in PHX Custom's Resurgence contest we held at the beginning of the year. The grand prize winner would be featured in Resurgence 2. The results of the contest were so close, I asked Joemichaels if I could do a custom of his Nega Watt figure to include as well. I did a different build than he did, as the head for the original was the same head used on a different character for Resurgence 2. As a nod to Joecustoms.com Red Laser vs. Blue Laser challenge, I included alot of blue, and kitbashed a gun based on the gun that came with the blue laser commander figure he had done.

Parts Used:
DTC Salvo Helmet
Roc Viper Torso
Retaliation Cyber Viper Upper Arms
PoC Firefly Lower Arms
Lowlight Thighs
Cobra Commander Battle Armor Lower legs
Star Trek Belt
Deadpool harness

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
The idea for Grease Monkey started with the name. Although the Joe team already has a few mechanics, none of them have that as their main specialty. I wanted to create a character that was an honest-to-gosh stay-at-base mechanic. I started with a cast head that I had in my fodder box. Since his role was more civilian in nature, I opted for very basic parts – a t-shirt with overalls and I wanted to include lots of tools and accessories. For the colors, I started with green overalls, but changed them to blue to set him apart from his military colleagues.

Head: Cast
Torso, arms, legs: Renegades Tunnel Rat
Accessories: Mighty World, Playmobil, Lego

Dusty - Mail Away figure

From the desk of Dusty79:
When Bucky and OB said they wanted to do a mail away set and offered for me to do an urban camo Dusty, I jumped at the chance. Not only was it an oppurtunity to do a modern update on Dusty throwing cues to the original design, but an oppurtunity to make an urban camo version that has not been done very often. I used a Luke Skywalker head to make it more unique and Bucky scanned me the arm patch of of his Sideshow Dusty so I could add that extra touch. I made the action shot backdrop specifically for this project using The Walking Dead guard tower and fence building set.

Parts used:
Torso, Upper Arms, Legs-50th Flint
Helmet, Goggles, Feet-POC Dusty
Lower Arms, Hands-Wave 1 Dollar General Cobra Trooper
Backpack-fodder bin
Webgear-Retaliation Flint (modded)
Head-Star Wars Black Series Awards Ceremony Luke Skywalker
Guns-Marauders

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
One of the very first figures that I finished for this project, Urban Ops Roadblock was meant to be a partner for my Beachhead that I did for part 1. I matched the urban camouflage pattern to Beachhead’s and, through a fortunate coincidence, it is an almost perfect match to the one on 50th Flint. So, with all these, I have the beginnings of a GI Joe urban ops team. I will certainly be adding more members in the future (Lowlight and Shockwave come to mind).

Head, torso, arms, legs, vest: Ret Roadblock

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
I love tanks. In 50 years, GI Joe has had surprisingly few of them. It would be great if big H introduced more tanks and other tracked vehicles (that are not a HISS or a Snowcat) into the line. For that reason, I wanted to create a new tracked vehicle. I had an old Wolverine base to start with. First thing I did was swap out the missile launchers in favor of a cannon. After that, I wanted to give the driver some added protection and lastly, I added the forward grenade launcher just for wacky fun. Bonus: it fits on the Orca for amphibious deployment.

Switch Gears was made at the tail end of our Project New Sculpt this year. Bucky made a great regular version of the character. When I was looking for a tank driver for the Cougar, I thought it would be fun to do the Desert Patrol Squad version as a nod to the Valor vs Venom figure. During the course of the project, I toyed with replacing him for something different. He was in the line-up, then out of the line-up, then in again. Finally, I decided that the Cougar could include two figures and went with it.

Treads came about for a few reasons. First, Switch Gears was done early in the project. After a while, I started thinking that I wanted a new character to drive the Cougar rather than an existing one. Since we had few females in the line, I went in that direction. Also, the Cougar cockpit is a bit of a tight squeeze for modern figures. I did not want to scratch the paint of the driver when I put them in the seat, so I built Treads with a slighter build.

Treads:
Head: Chap Mei I think
Torso, arms: Ret Lady Jaye
Legs: 25th Lady Jaye

Switch Gears:
Head, torso, arms: PoC Hawk
Upper legs: 25th Tripwire
Lower legs: Resolute Firefly
Vest: DTC Lowlight
Helmet: VvV Leatherneck

Cougar:
Base: Vintage Wolverine
Grenade launcher, turret: PTE
Canopy: Vintage Recon Sled (modified)

From the desk of Bucky:
I've been to Tombstone, Arizona. Lincoln County, New Mexico, and Fort Sumner, New Mexico to visit the Kid's grave. All towns connected to various colorful characters tied to the old west. I'm a somewhat novice old west buff, having spent my youth in AZ, but not really pursuing it much until the last couple of years. The new found interest was taken and I decided to work it into a Joe. The idea was in my head for most of part 1, and the character Eagle Eye was going to be High Noon. Over the course of a couple of months, Eagle Eye morphed into something completely different and not western at all, and the name was shelved for another go round, this time with heavy Old West influence as I wanted him to be.
I really enjoyed making this figure quite a bit, and did what I could to differentiate him from Wild Bill. He went through numerous torsos and scarf combos before I settled on one I liked. One of my favorite figures I've done in a couple of years.
A fun note, on the Eagle Eye figure for Resurgence part 1, you can actually see the gun High Noon uses also attached to Eagle's backpack.

Parts Used:
New Sculpt Wild Bill Hat
PoC Recondo Head, Sculpted hair and mustache
Wolverine Origins Coat
Hobbit Figure Vest, Modified
Upper Legs: Storm Shadow
Lower Legs: B.A.T.
Upper Arms: Snake Eyes
Star Wars figure belt
Lower Arms: Dollar General Cobra Commander

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of the Dreadnoks. I’m not against them per se. I think that having a biker gang to cause chaos is a useful tool for a terrorist organization like Cobra. However, they were never my favorites and, before the 25th anniversary, I never had a Dreadnok in my collection. That said, after Bucky did the fantastic Riff Raff last year, I was inspired to try my hand at making my own. I started from the Chap Mei head and the RoC Heavy Duty torso. That gave me a large character. The rest came together after that.

Head: Chap Mei

From the desk of Robert Osborne (Ozzie92), winner of the 2015 JoeCon Franken-Joe contest.

I was asked to provide a custom for Resurgence 2, and let me tell you...the honor was all mine!

The request was for an urban/desert Cobra soldier, with the idea that it would be largely a repaint, offered as a mail away promotion. Hence, my design/parts choices. Starting with the Dollar General blue Cobra Trooper, I decided on my color scheme (urban influenced) and camo pattern (desert influenced from the mid-90s, "chocolate chip"). After that, the focus turned to the accessories. I used a knit cap cast from AVAC'S LAB and attached a pair of 50th Hawk's goggles. I painted his mask gray like the first ME officer, suggesting a modicum of experience, with possible officer ranking. I painted Hawk's tactical vest gray, along with a fodder web belt/pouches. I also painted the gloves, kneepads, and boots gray, as well as a scarf cast from AVAC. I used the holster as a gas mask mount, and attached it with a bit of bandolier fodder painted black. I gave him a flashlight, as well as an assault rifle lightly dry-brushed with steel. The boot knife blade was painted steel, too. I attached another bit of fodder bandolier to the rifle, and wah-lah! Resurgence 2's promotional mail away figure. Thanks for the vine, Joes...hope you enjoy. :)

''Following the disastrous events of Operation Waterfront where several Joes were taken prisoner by Cobra, General Hawk has tasked Chuckles to put together a team to find and rescue his men. Meanwhile, a new group of GI Joe recruits are tasked with finding out what Cobra’s new plan is. Little do they know that both missions will lead them to Gold Springs, a nice little town in the desert…''

From the desk of Bucky:
The idea to revisit eagle eye came early on in some brainstorming sessions. Originally the figures build was rather bulky, with heavy armor and padding. As time progressed on, and seeing behind the scenes pictures that the other guys were doing, it made more sense that as technology advances, so does the gear. I scrapped the build I had and started concentrating on a slimmer, meaner looking Eagle Eye. The original figure from part 1 was one of my favorite builds, and I have since become rather attached to the character. I liked what I had come up with for part 1, though looking back, he seems a bit cobbled together. I am even more pleased with version 2.

The backpack idea with the gun attached I wanted to keep, as I looked at it like one of those accessories that identifies the figure.. Not having a copy of the original pack gun, I used a data viper one instead. It ended up working great, as it can still detach and be used as a pistol if needed. I found an old shield and did some light dremel work to get it to attach to the backpack, along with modifying another mini missile launcher to attach as well. The main gun he uses is a modded marvel universe.

The build was more fun than I have had customizing in a long time, and I was trying to mimic the vintage figure that had awesome play accessories and attachments. I've become attached to the actual character itself as well, and plan on doing more of him in the future. I just need to get that helmet I made cast.

Parts Used:
Retaliation Trooper Helmet (modded)
PoC Duke torso, with modded Bazooka belt and added pouches
Retaliation Snake Eyes arms
Poc Firefly legs, with Pouches and Retaliation trooper holsters.
Guns-Marvel Universe, Remco
Shield-Robotech

Day 12:

''Cobra is back! ''Cobra Commander's plan to capture Duke has failed. GI Joe has rescued their first sergeant and destroyed Cobra's jungle fortress. Beaten, but not destroyed, Cobra has retreated to lick their wounds and plan their next move. To put his new plan into motion, Cobra Commander has recruited new agents and has unleashed them onto the battlefield!''

From the desk of Oreobuilder:
After doing the Inferno BAT for Resurgence I, I liked the recipe so much, I wanted to make another BAT using the same basic parts. At first, I was thinking about using the classic black and yellow. However, I decided to explore another possible specialty and turned to Techno-Vipers. I figured that BATs could assist the battlefield technicians in making emergency repairs on vehicles and equipment in the heat of battle. Techno-Vipers are highly trained and few in number and Techno-BATs are more expendable, so they take part in the more dangerous missions.

Head: Ret Combat Ninja
Torso, arms: 25th BAT
Legs: RoC Accelerator Suit Duke
Backpack, gear: 30th Techno-Viper

Debugger w. Icebreaker - Alpha Class vehicle

The Debugger is on the attack! Its 6 large wheels propel it on any terrain. This rolling super-computer can predict GI Joe's strategies and transmit battlefield information to SWARM Troopers. The Debugger will lead Cobra to victory! Includes driver ICEBREAKER.

From the desk of KeepItCleanCustoms:

Working in IT as my career path I have developed somewhat of a natural affinity or obsession with the Data Viper troops. I’ve done several pieces catering to what I assume they would need to achieve their missions. With this piece I saw this captain america tank and loved the mold and thought the Data Viper color scheme would make it pop a bunch. The only real changes I made were adding some Zoid fodder I had from Zoid Liger upgrade kit for the canons, rocket pod, and antenna. Everything else was just paint krylon paints with acrylic hand painted accents. Hope you enjoy!

From the desk of Bucky:
Sam (Doe138) came forward during Resurgence 1, and let us know he liked what he saw and wanted to design packaging for the Resurgence figures. Of course, he was more than welcomed back for part 2, and he had some great ideas to boot, one of them being the Son of Destro. I took the task on of trying to create something for him.
We purposely left out Prodigy's mother, wanting to leave it open as to whether he was born before of after Destro hooked up with Cobra. I had the head picked out long ago, as I thought it was a nice in-between a full metal face mask and a new take on one. The rest of the body came together over time, and color was added later to help break up the black and make him more "Joe". The hoverboard was included to give him a little dash of youth, and is something he more than likely came up with himself.

From the Mind of Sam Panico:
I always wondered, if the Joes and Cobras had kids, what would they be like? I imagined that Destro would have a son who studied at the finest school, had the cunning and inventiveness of all the McCullen clan, yet hadn't matured yet. He'd be in the circle of reality star kids. He's probably slept with a few Hiltons and fired flamethrowers at a few Karadasians. I figured Destro would want to both toughen him up and also protect him, so what better place than with the Joes? The fact that Flint is looking out for him is kind of cool, as I always felt there was a debt of honor between Destro, Lady Jaye and Flint. I'm beyond excited at how he came out!

Parts:
head-Hydra trooper
Torso-resolute duke
Upper arms-retaliation cobra commander
lower arms-jungle viper
belt-modded new sculpt dusty
upper legs-firefly
lower legs-alley viper
