Crimson Guard
Cobra Elite Trooper

The Crimson Guard first appeared in comic form in issue #37. It's pretty clear that the penciller did not have an actual CG for reference, since they're drawn to resemble HISS Drivers with a few slight colouration differences. So this was an easy custom to make. Just take a HISS Driver and paint his facemask, chest plate, upper legs and knee pads red, and his gloves grey. Kit him out with a Firefly gun and you're all set. The No-Prize explanation for their appearance in this issue is that the new CG uniforms hadn't arrived yet, so Cobra Commander issued surplus HISS Driver outfits in the meantime.

Cobra Battle Tank

In 1984, Consumers Distributing released a all-black recoloured MOBAT as the “Cobra Motorized Tank” exclusive to the Canadian Market. That struck me as a pretty easy custom to do – take a MOBAT apart, spray paint it black, put it back together. I removed the commander's gun and added a gun from the Moray to give it something to set it apart from the MOBAT, and added some Crimson Attack Tank stickers from Toyhax for a little more colour as well. The original name is pretty uninspired, so I called it the Fer de Lance, the name of a snake that means “spearhead” in French, which I thought was appropriate for a tank.

Devilfish 1
Sea Devils Coastal Patrol Craft

Finally today, the last vehicle for my Sea Devils subteam. Since Cutter was on the team, I wanted a hovercraft to be Devilfish 1, and found one from the Corps! series which fits the bill. Like the other vehicles, I painted it with an ultramarine base coat before applying some blue over it, giving it kind of an interesting speckled look which unfortunately doesn't come out as well in the pics as it does in person, though this one comes through a little better due to the better lighting when I took the pics.

Cobra Commander
Enemy Leader

For the first 16 issues of the Marvel comic, Cobra Commander had a unique appearance that was not based on his action figure outfit, which first appeared in #18. He also appeared this way in the ubiquitous comic book ad for the 1983 Atari 2600 game GI Joe: Cobra Strikes. This custom is inspired by that appearance. The Talking Battle Commander version of CC was probably based on this outfit, with high boots and aiguillettes on the shoulder. But it still has some significant differences from the comic, so I wanted to make a more accurate version. In the comic, CC alternates between hood and helmet in this outfit, so I included both heads with this custom. This one required a lot of little modifications, such as trimming down the front of the knees to match the lower legs, trimming down the collar, removing the chest insignia, slimming down the arms, and working on the inside of the waist and bottom of the torso to improve the fit.

I really like this latest batch. The comic CG is great. I have been meaning to make that Cobra CAT since I made my black VAMP. Seeing yours made me find the MOBAT that I had put aside for this. Cobra Commander is perfect.

The Sea Devils are a fantastic sub-team. They would make an awesome convention set.
Love that special forces Stalker from page 6. One of the best camo versions I've seen so far, I'd buy that immediately!
