At this point I've got a few tweaks left to make and then I'll be ready to cast. Anybody have recommendations for getting a really nice smooth finish? Any specific products? or do I just need to get a bunch of sand paper in progressively finer grits.
Cool idea making a fat guy buck. I would definitely get it pretty close to where you want it with sandpaper, but there is a product that will help fill in imperfections in the surface, smooth out the transition areas between the figure parts and modeling putty, and leave a factory-like smooth finish. It's an automotive product called Plasti Kote Scratch Color. Comes in a 1 oz. bottle with a brush cap. It's weird stuff, I don't know how it leaves such a smooth surface, but it seems to have enough of a surface tension that even when you brush the stuff on pretty recklessly it will still smooth itself out.
The stuff looks like this.
