My next reimagined Joe is Stalker. I wanted to embody him being a Ranger, with new patch designs show that off. I’m really excited that his multicam effectively allows his painting to melt into the shadows of the jungle. He’s based on the Sideshow figure, but I adjusted his vest to be a bit closer to modern tactical vests, with cutouts for the camo. And of course, I went with a modernized H&K MP5 for him, as that’s what I always see him carrying.

My next reimagined Joe is Steeler. Steeler is one of the few Joes from Pittsburgh (Depth Charge is the other), so you have to forgive my hometown pride and giving him a Terrible Towel on his uniform. I wanted Steeler to be a modern tank commander and think this get pretty close. It's funny that he was such a big deal character to kids around me growing up, but is near forgotten in Joe fandom these days (including turning traitor in the recent IDW comics).

My next reimagined Joe is Zap. He's based on a Soldier Story figure, but I wanted to get across the Combat Engineer side of him, not just the guy who blows stuff up. That’s reflected in his patch. His other patch is the backward facing black and white American flag. Why? Well, according to Army regulation 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, the regulation states when authorized for application to the proper uniform, the U.S. flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder, so that “the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the ‘reverse side flag.' That said, I know Joe isn't 100% accurate. Maybe I just thought it was cool. What do you think?

Those are cool. Not only modern but very realistic.

These are great. I could see this as a potential GP topic where the members could interpret your artwork into figure form. Give us more!!!

This stuff is brilliant. I love the Cobra Commander and Officer the most, but that Flash is absolutely standout.

The only critique that I have is the photos that you used for the background. They're distracting in the difference in detail. Maybe run them through the cartoon filter at befunky.com?

It would end up looking sort of like this. The difference is subtle, but it makes the background less distracting and works well with the composition of the work.

Granted, it might make the background indistinguishable from your work, and you may have done that deliberately to highlight your painting - clarifying what you did vs. what you didn't. If so, that makes sense.

I really love the use of digital camo in colors to tie back to the original figures without losing the military feel. And I love that you nailed the shadows.

Raptor - Thanks, man. My style of painting is to combine real elements with painted ones so that the figure pops out. I've handprinted some backgrounds, so it changes up. I appreciate the critique!

TR101AL - I would love if people made these from my paintings!

Wild Bill is next. I wanted an Air Calvary/helicopter pilot that didn’t cosplay, but didn’t forget his roots. I wanted a younger, tougher guy and am really happy with the results. A bit grizzled, but a guy as tough on the ground as he is in the air.

EDIT: Added Warrant Officer insignia to his collar.

These are very cool. Gonna echo Raptor's suggestion that the backgrounds are a bit busy, maybe even a simple "cutout" filter or something to that effect in PS would tone them down a bit, but the designs themselves are excellent.

Up next in my Reimagined Series 2 is Doc, who I never liked as a kid. There were too many other colorful Joes, but as I was creating him, I saw a Combat Medic patch that said Do No Harm, Do Know Harm. That pointed me toward a Doc that can kick some ass, but chooses to save it.

My next reimagined Joe is Ace, who is based on Lt. Col. Merryl Tengesdal, the only black female in history to fly the U-2 spy plane. I’ve always loved that G.I. Joe had a multicultural and equal opportunity team. So here’s to even more of that, while celebrating a real American hero. Starting with the Navy’s SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, she’s moved her way up to become a U-2 Dragon Lady pilot and 9th Reconnaissance Wing inspector general.

Up next: Cover Girl, who has always been an interesting Joe to me. I asked my wife, “What red head 80s supermodel would be the best to become a GI Joe?” She instantly answered, “Linda Evangelista.” Now, Linda’s Canadian, but Cover Girl drives the Wolverine. Well, she did until this version. Now, she’s an MLRS Operator, or a Multiple Launch Rocket System, which is as close to the Wolverine as I could find in the real world.
