I agree that Grey Ghost is super nice. It's cool to see a custom of that character. I like your take on Black MAsk too. The Destro head works really well. What did you use for the body?

Thank you so much dude!

Grey Ghost was a long time comin'... been planning that piece for years and finally got all the parts I needed. It's one of my favorites and was very satisfying to complete.

Black Mask is an Indiana Jones torso bashed onto a movie Cobra Commander lower body. The Destro head was almost out of necessity... I've made a lot of characters with skull masks, so I needed another option. I remembered that when I was a kid, Black Mask's design was different and that his mask was much more "human" rather than skeletal... plus I find it a lot creepier to be honest.

Imagine being tied to a chair and having that expressionless face with those eyes staring at you, approaching with a cleaver...

On October 4th, I had the pleasure of being a part of Mysteries of the Unexplained, a group art show featuring artists from all over South Florida. In addition to being Halloween-themed (my favorite holiday), what made it even more rad was that my work appeared alongside extremely talented, local creative types like my friend Baghead (https://www.facebook.com/bagheadart)

Image

Once I read the theme for the show, the concept for "The Anomaly" arrived almost instantaneously. I'd been experimenting with glow-in-the-dark paint, as well as the subjects of astronauts and rockets for some time, and it actually ties in with a much larger concept, to be revealed later this year and going into 2014.

Image

Like all of my other work, it began with toy pieces (an old Star Wars figure, GI Joe bits, a 3.75" scale skull from a playlet, etc.), then evolved from there. The initial plan was to display the actual figure at Bear & Bird, but they needed something hangable, so the concept was reworked. Instead, the figure was shot in front of a diorama, then printed 8" X 10" and framed. While not my original intention, it produced what I envisioned in my mind, all without having to worry about the lighting of the piece or if the ghostly effect was going to work.

It is, forever, bathed in the creepy, ethereal glow.

Mysteries of the Unexplained runs through November at Bear & Bird Gallery. For more info, please visit:

This is incredibly cool. Possibly one of the coolest things I've ever seen on here. Kudos, man, you truly outdid yourself.

Thank you, UncleHappy!!

It was a ton of fun to make, and a nice break from the licensed characters. Been itching to build more original concepts (and fine art stuff too), and already got stuff bubbling at The Lab.

Keep it locked, got some really fun updates coming to celebrate my site's one year anniversary!

Thank you kind sir!

While I am a Venture Brothers fan ("Go Team Venture!"), I've got to admit that artist Travis Pitt's clever take on Pac-Man was an inspiration: http://www.playthepast.org/?p=2048

...Hmm. Looking at the design again, I may need to create a set of these...

This Halloween, to celebrate the one year anniversary of my site and my favorite holiday, I did a number of spooky/creepy posts in the spirit of the season, so to speak. Here's a general survey of the submissions for the month, but be sure to check out The Lab for the full write-ups and pictures! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

GHOSTBUSTER ROOKIE:

The very first piece I posted on my site, the n00b here needed to be revisited with a new set of photos. An LBC for sure, but one of my all-time favorite pieces I've ever made, and super-poseable.

UNMENSCH/ZOMBIE:

Created and shot before my extensive use of dioramas and sets, I always felt my Unmensch deserved a better series of photos than what he initially got. While I've kicked around ideas of doing one more to complete the "trilogy," I still consider this guy to be my definitive statement on the undead.

FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER (MCFARLANE MONSTERS PLAYSET):

McFarlane Toys-- my favorite company at the time-- began putting out playsets in the 4" scale loosely based on classic Universal horror. While I have a soft spot in my heart for all of the sets, my favorite from the first series (and the first set I bought from the line) was Frankenstein's Monster. Packed with detail and crammed with accessories, it's one of the coolest toys of all time.

Damn. You knocked all of these out of the park, but I'm especially enamored with your Dr. Frankenstein and his Monster.

Dude! Thank you so much! Means a lot coming from you, man. At this point, before I go into your threads, I already put my jaw on the floor, cuz that's where it's gonna be anyway. And I always say the same thing after seeing your work: "I've got to get better."

Thank you Kilcarr! The set was my favorite when I was collecting McFarlane as a teenager... it sums up the spirit of that line perfectly, so there was no better one to start with than that. I'm hoping to have more "adaptations" of the McF Monsters playsets done by next Halloween. Already got some ideas about who to make next...

I've got some projects that fit in the era of those sets, so I snagged a bunch of them on ebay last year. I'm looking forward to working with them, and your work here just adds to that inspiration

Howdy!

After a busy holiday season, things have finally settled back down at The Lab enough to begin posting my wrap-up of 2013 and brand-new, never-before-seen pieces for 2014! :-D

The Holidaze are over, but I wanted this post to be all about gifts I gave in 2013-- everything ranging from classic video game characters to drug kingpins to a special request from my 5 year-old godson...

GOLD NINJA:

Image

This piece was created at the request of my godson, who wanted "A non-fragile gold ninja!"

A few months earlier I was going to make him one using a Retaliation Ninja, but after he said wanted something "non-fragile," I decided to repaint one of the Wolverine movie ninja figures. When he got it, my godson kept saying, "This is EXACTLY what I wanted!!!" and wouldn't stop hugging me. Mission accomplished.

ULTRA-VIOLET:

Image

My godson is not the only one with his own figure... I also made a more conventional, Modern Era Joe for his older sister, who has been collecting GI Joes with her dad for 5+ years.

Together, her dad and I brainstormed Ultra-Violet, a triple agent who is supposed to be the adult version of my goddaughter.

Ultra-Violet is a Dreadnok animal wrangler who has also worked for COBRA on many occasions. She then reports back all movements to GI Joe-- her true identity. In addition to providing intel, classified documents, and spying, she's also a part-time vet specializing in the Joe team's pets/animals.

SCORPION:

Image

Image

Scorpion was created for a good friend of mine's birthday.

When he first found out I made toys, he asked me if I would ever consider making Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. While video games and video game characters aren't my usual forte, when I saw the Retaliation Ninja, I couldn't help but oblige. He's pretty much just a straight-up repaint of that figure and Storm Shadow lower arms bashed onto RN's super-poseable wrist gauntlets.

THE 11TH DOCTOR:

Image

Image

The Doctor here was made for my girlfriend, who is a huge Doctor Who (and Strange Labs) fangirl. When she saw the official 3.75" figures, she said, "Those look like crap. You can do so much better!"

The head's a Han Solo from over 10 years ago, on a Professor X body. When I primed the head, I thought it looked like Matt Smith. Once I painted it, the Solo thing became way more visible. I'm debating whether or not I should find a replacement. My girlfriend loves it and would rather have me work on something new instead. :rotfl:

HEISENBERG:

Image

Image

The alter-ego of mild-mannered Walter White is another piece I created for my girlfriend, who is also a Breaking Bad fanatic.

She spotted the Mezco Heisenberg on a toy site, but was disappointed when she found out it was a large scale figure, to which I replied, "No problem."

Heisenberg was made from a Mutt torso, Storm Shadow legs, and a primed head I had sitting on my workbench that was intended for another character entirely. Inspiration struck, and that was it. The miniature bag of "product" is an actual plastic bag cut down to size, filled with a random clear blue accessory that I found and chopped up. I felt the irony the whole time.

MORE TO COME...

Fantastic Gold Ninja.
I just rewatched Super Ninja the other day and this guy would fit the bill perfectly as the Metal Ninja.
I guess I might have to hunt down a few to make all 5 element ninjas now.

Thank you man! That Professor X should be 2013's figure of the year based on reusability alone!

Thanks Redmao! My godson was very specific about how he wanted a "shiny gold" ninja. First I hit it with white primer, then used Krylon's 18 kt gold spray paint-- tall skinny can with shiny gold cap, sprays like a dream...
