thanks for the comments all.

I like the way he looks now, though the arms are still flawed. Both from a size perspective, but also a staying-together one. The way I had to mismatch pieces, and also the way I shaved it down made him a bit more fragile than I would prefer. So if anyone else can think up a 2 inch scaled figure line with thin articulated arms, let me know!

Just throwing this out there for future reference, the Clone Wars figures, especially female characters, had absurdly thin arms with varying articulation. Problem not worth more than a base to sculpt around though.

Nevermind, should have known he was the BAF. Even if he was perfect that just makes him a paint to get a hold of.

thanks Dan.

Yeah, there's a lot of work sitting there. But I'm kind of constrained on what projects I can do at the moment, because my basement is in a bit of disarray. So I might just try to tackle this.

pluv also reminded me of the 7" Treebeard figure. So I will consider some of those as fallback options, for sure.

I almost could justify buying the set of Legends sized figures - my son and I liked the movie enough. But then I'd want Groot to go with that set primarily

So I haven't started piecing Groot back together yet, because I got side tracked by a Star-Lord WIP my son is demanding that I finish. lol

I couldn't find a head that looked sufficiently like Chris Pratt, so I decided to make my own. I started with a face from a 'The Hobbit' Dwarf figure (I never bothered to remember which figure was which dwarf). I then sculpted the head and the hair from that.

Image

here it is painted, except for the eyes:
Image

there is actually a magnet buried in the hairline, and initially I planned to simply have the Star-Lord helmet be a removable mask. But my son talked me into just making swappable heads. I'm glad he did. That way I was able to make it look much more screen accurate and less like a toy gimmick.

So here is the progress on the figure itself. Mind you, I want it to be a movie verse Star-Lord, but I don't usually get caught up in capturing every wrinkle and buckle for screen accuracy.

Image

I modded the guns, the tape player and parts of the helmet from the Minimates figure, per Hypno Hustler's suggestion and keen eye.

You can see I'm not done yet. Still plenty of details to iron out.
Image

Image
The masked head is built starting with a Wraith head. I glued the mask in position, sculpted the hair, then added bits of the minimate helmet and sculpted onto the wraith mask (actually I modded it as well before adding to it).

I can't recall where the coat came from. I know it's a bit small, but I like that it doesn't overshadow the figure, and it also doesn't hinder articulation. The arms are the newest CG arms, so they are playable in that any paint run will mostly blend in with the base color.

I MIGHT make a second version of the figure in the short coat, or I might just make a swappable coat depending on my mood. I also plan to see if Rodimus has interest in casting any of the heads I am working on.

Speaking of - WIP Phil Coulson head (ahem, excuse me - his first name isn't Phil, it's Agent - Thanks Tony, got it).

And a quick update on Gamora's body work:

It's been fun sculpting this round. I'm gaining confidence that I can sculpt about any detail I'd need at this point and have it be at least passable.

Let me know what you think.

Starlord is flawless and I'm very excited to see what you make of Groot.

As an aside, while watching GOTG, I couldn't help thinking they'd all seem perfectly at home in Joe's Cantina.

Thanks guys!

SG - yeah I plan to see if Rodimus has interest in any of these for his store. Will keep you posted.

2D2C - Thanks man. I have always prided myself in the fleshtone painting, so I'm glad I haven't lost it quite yet ;) I admit I was surprised on smooth Coulson's head turned out though, especially with the sculpting.

Spin - That's a helluva compliment right there, that you went to see a movie as awesome as GOTG and thought of my little Cantina project. Some of the figures might make a cameo or two, we shall see.

All of these are coming along nicely. I cant wait to see the finished group. Especially Groot. That has the look to be the articulated figure we should have got from Hasbro.

thanks man!

More slow, methodical updates...

decided to add armor to Star-Lord's left arm. Still need to decide his forearm. This shot is pre-paint
Image

Also, I originally glued his cassette player to his belt, but the thought occurred to me there would be times I'd not want to mess with the headphones, etc... So I decide to make the player removable from the belt. Magnets should do the trick.

Image

Also, just for fun, a little scene my son was setting up on my desk while I worked

Nice work. Magnets are a great idea.

Who are the purple guys?

I made them to be Star Law type police officers for the sci-fi verse, but Luke has stolen them and is using them as part of the Nova Corps.

Any chance to get clearer pics of them?
