So I haven't started piecing Groot back together yet, because I got side tracked by a Star-Lord WIP my son is demanding that I finish. lol
I couldn't find a head that looked sufficiently like Chris Pratt, so I decided to make my own. I started with a face from a 'The Hobbit' Dwarf figure (I never bothered to remember which figure was which dwarf). I then sculpted the head and the hair from that.
here it is painted, except for the eyes:
there is actually a magnet buried in the hairline, and initially I planned to simply have the Star-Lord helmet be a removable mask. But my son talked me into just making swappable heads. I'm glad he did. That way I was able to make it look much more screen accurate and less like a toy gimmick.
So here is the progress on the figure itself. Mind you, I want it to be a movie verse Star-Lord, but I don't usually get caught up in capturing every wrinkle and buckle for screen accuracy.
I modded the guns, the tape player and parts of the helmet from the Minimates figure, per Hypno Hustler's suggestion and keen eye.
You can see I'm not done yet. Still plenty of details to iron out.
The masked head is built starting with a Wraith head. I glued the mask in position, sculpted the hair, then added bits of the minimate helmet and sculpted onto the wraith mask (actually I modded it as well before adding to it).
I can't recall where the coat came from. I know it's a bit small, but I like that it doesn't overshadow the figure, and it also doesn't hinder articulation. The arms are the newest CG arms, so they are playable in that any paint run will mostly blend in with the base color.
I MIGHT make a second version of the figure in the short coat, or I might just make a swappable coat depending on my mood. I also plan to see if Rodimus has interest in casting any of the heads I am working on.
Speaking of - WIP Phil Coulson head (
ahem, excuse me - his first name isn't Phil, it's Agent - Thanks Tony, got it).
And a quick update on Gamora's body work:
It's been fun sculpting this round. I'm gaining confidence that I can sculpt about any detail I'd need at this point and have it be at least passable.
Let me know what you think.
