Here's a photo of the paint scheme prior to sanding and re-priming. Close examination of the photo will show the runs and general ugliness of the application. But it should give you an idea of the direction I'm heading.

Hoo boy, long time, no post. But there's finally an update worth reading.

I spent some time working on the engines. Specifically, I molded the exhaust can from the old Testors SR-71 kit and cast four of 'em. These were the exhausts for the smaller engines. I also fabbed up the large main engine exhaust, essentially scaling up the dimensions from the smaller cans.

Here's the WIP photos of the engines, showing the details I pulled together. The inner bowl of each small engine starts with a coffee creamer cup, trimmed to length, and glued inside of a piece of 1" PVC pipe. Yep, just like the stuff running under your house. I added a small hemisphere, then sprayed the interior flat black and drybrushed with silver, white and grey. Finally, the exhaust cans were added.

The main engine was fabbed up the same way; long-time readers may remember I wanted to use a burner can made from a Dole's fruit cup. Ultimately I decided to make something that looked more like the smaller engines, but the fruit cup is still in there; I trimmed it down to make the ring around the perimeter. I also added some ribbing I found in my scrap box and a conical washer from a faucet. Paint the whole thing flat black and drybrush grey, silver and white, and presto!

I finally got a white pearl base finish I can live with, so tomorrow there'll be more painting, as well as installing the engines and the rear wall. After that, I'm down to installing the interior , hanging the canopy, and putting some decals on the exterior. I'm in the home stretch!

Think you'll have an awesome custom that you can be proud of the work you put into it!

Well, here it is. The quinjet is now finished. All in all, I'm pleased. The white pearl paint was a bear, the canopy can't stand open by itself and I'm going to re-examine my landing gear designs for future projects, but I think the final product is pretty good.

If I build another one I'll make a few changes, but for now this one's in the books.

Really awesome. Don't think I have the skill to scratch build like that and I know I don't have the patience. All those details are amazing.

The photos don't do the paint job justice. It's at once silver and white, just what I was looking for. Now if only I didn't have to paint it three or four times....

Thanks Dusty79. This has been a dream project for me, and I've wanted one since, oh, 1980 or so. I'm just sorry it took me so long to build the doggone thing.
