Why do I always get my hopes up?

So I've wanted a decent Daredevil fig for a while - my Microman custom just wasn't cutting it. I was about to make one out of a Torpedo body, but gijoey kept saying I should wait until the new Marvel U figs come out first. And since DD was in the first wave, I decided to wait. Then I saw the initial pics of his sculpt, and wasn't impressed - but I still waited. Then yesterday, I found him at TRU and brought him home and discovered this:

Image

Now, I don't know if I've ever mentioned it here in the forums, but I have this intense hatred of short people.* Hell, I'm all of 6' and I still consider myself a pygmy. So having a mini-me looking DD was totally unacceptable. Then I looked over at Deadpool and realized that he was in line with my "standard buck" for superheroes. And he was already half-way red! A few applications of Citadel Gore Red and Scab Red and a ball-joint fix later and I had this:

Image

Kinda reminds me of movie Daredevil - and I mean that in a good way. The red doesn't look as splotchy in person - I used a darker shade on the former black parts and it looks really nice in-hand, but the camera wants to magnify thin spots, apparently.

Ok, next up - Wolverine. Talk about inconsistency across the lines (or even within the lines) - he goes from being about the same size as HBII Liz Sherman to being almost as tall as MU Torch:

Image

- I snagged the MU version and really preferred the articulation and sculpt over any of the movie Logan figs (the "unmasked" brown costume Wolvie on the left was going to be my default until yesterday.)

So I decided, given my hatred of all things smaller than me, to go ahead and use the taller MU Wolvie as my new default - and make him more of a Hugh Jackman-esque character instead of a 5'3" soccer hooligan. I painted the silver parts brown, since I wanted him to be a little more Wolvie-looking, gave him new claws (MM hands with Weapon-X claws attached) and came up with this:

Image

But that wasn't enough, was it? I had to go and make an unmasked head like I do for everybody else (still gotta do DD's sometime.) I didn't want to use the berserker Wolvie head, since I really like the way it looks on my shorter brown Logan, and the civilian Logan head was too small (the neckball on MU Wolvie is HUGE), so I went about making my own.

Image

I'm tellin' you, that Chris Jericho fig is easily the most versatile BnB fig I own. I used his legs for most of my newer heroes, and his head for Kraven, Road Pig, and now Logan -- all it took was a little green stuff, some black paint, and a crapload of Dremeling and I've got it almost where I want it. Oh - and he's got swappable hands so he doesn't look so stupid holding a sword or a gun. I still want to set his head a little lower on his shoulders, but the damn neckball is so long that I'm afraid I'll drill a hole up through the top of his head :-/

So now I'm burned out on Superhero customs. At least until we start seeing some new waves with some chick figures...... :shifty:

Anyway, comments are welcome as always.

Cheers!

*and my apologies to TC, Kama, and any other diminutive members that I may have offended -- you guys should know by now that I'm just kidding ;)

Damn Chief, if 6' is your listed height, what's your real height? 5'10"? Shorty.
:-D

I love the fixes you've made here. I share in your disappointment with much of the line so far. There is so much potential there. But if there's anything we've learned so far, it's not to expect the best version in the early part of the line. If they were perfect from the get-go, we'd be more likely to buy just one...

Anyway, the only figure I've enjoyed out of the box (of the 5 or so MU figs I've bought) is Captain America. He just moves better than the others. I know he was too tall for your version, but I like that he towers over some of the figures I have. My only gripe is the pea-head, and if I do a fix, it will be there, as I intend to follow your lead with having an unmasked version for him (right now I'm leaning towards the resolute Duke head).

Your Wolverine mods are inspired, as far as I'm concerned. I don't have the same fodder as you to make some of those fixes, so I'll probably leave mine in it's production state for now. But I am envious of how your Marvel figs are shaping up. DD looks a ton better with your mods than he did from Hasbro.

The part to be thankful for is that as a customizer, at least the small imperfections give you a legit reason to put your mark on the figure.

You know, chief, you and spectre have that rare condition where you don't mind fixing the manufacturer's mistakes, lol.

I applaud your work, but why did you have to sacrifice a deadpool for daredevil>? :(

Though, its fitting, since marvel legends did the opposite, lol.

I also share your belief about height, I'm right under 6 foot and I am surrounded by freakin giants or something, :(

It was either that, or re-sell it for like $30 or something.... :P

And Dennis, my last official height measurement was 71.75 inches -- and I figure that's only because I'm balding. If somebody thumps me on the head really good, I'll get that extra 1/4 inch with the resulting lump, so I'm sticking to the 6ft story ;)

Thanks guys!

Lets see, so far you hate long haired guys, and short people. I must really be at the top of your S**T list then. :shifty:

Do you hate Native Americans, Italians, and Irish too? If so I'm screwed.

Great fix for a super crappy figure though. :-P

Hate Native Americans? Absolutely not - I'm mostly Scottish but with a dash of Cherokee (or at least that's what I claim), so I cherish "my" people. Irish & Italians, however - yeah, they're on the list ;)

Thanks Tim & TC!

I get the feeling that for book keeping reason, and reduction of paper, you have a list of people you don't hate, right?

I'm with ya, and my list of "greivances and grudges" grows a little every day.

Just wait til I see my mailman in the parking lot of IHOP, lol.

Loving that Daredevil. Definitely getting a movie DD vibe from it and that's a good thing. Say what you will about the movie (director's cut is WAY better) the costume design was all win.

Gotta ask what head that is on Cap. I like it.

Thanks MS - the Cap head is just a 25A Hawk head that I painted blonde. It works perfectly for the character, IMO.
