Don't know why I haven't made this guy yet --- he's always been one of my favorite characters. It wasn't until the other day when Tim (TansToys) submitted his Knight self-custom that I finally got a kick in the shorts to build my own BK. I picked up a MU Goblin (the SHS version is just too skinny for an athletic dude in armor, IMO) and started playing around with ideas and this is what I finally came up with:

Image

The Dragon Emblem on his chest is hand-painted. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out (got some new fine-tipped brushes and apparently they work! :D )

The helmet's not quite right. I was going to shuck it completely until I gave BK a new head, then it fit a little better. Still needs some tweaks, though. Luckily, I prefer him sans helmet anyway.

Image

My only real problem is that Cap's "stripes" still show through, despite sanding them down. They're not quite as bad in person, but they're still there. But I can deal with it. I'm not doing any more "tweaking" now that I've got that dragon how I want it ;)

Here he is with the gang - hanging out unmasked....

Image

And finally, some preview WIP shots of a little Father-Daughter project Lil' Chief and I are working on -- He's going to be Pegasus, but he works well as Aragorn too ;-)

- that white speck on Dane's boot is from the wet paint on Pegasus (was in a rush to post these pics before bed.)

Parts--
Black Knight:
Head: DTC Mutt
Torso: MU Captain America
Arms & Legs: MU Green Goblin (modded)
Sword: LOTR Aragorn (oh, the irony) modded
Scabbard: homemade with tape, straps from an Indy satchel, & superglue
Sucky Helmet: ARC Trooper modded

Pegasus/Aragorn:
Indy Horse
Wings: Toy Biz Xmen Angel '97

Cheers!

sweet stuff Dan. BK does look alittle skinny in the MU version too but not as skinny as my SHS self custom. I like this and his steed. I beleive trigates made ablack knight helmeted head though.
Tim :-D

Thanks Tim!

Yeah, the MU Goblin is pretty scrawny, too - at least in the torso, which is why I swapped it with Cap's. Since I screwed up the boil-n-pop of the arms, I ended up having to repair Gobby's shoulders and actually beefed them up a bit in the process. Now Dane's upper body is actually bulkier than Cap is - but the legs are a tad on the skinny side, considering they're supposed to be covered in mail.

Very cool. I love that the helmet is removable. Top notch work.

Awsome work on BK. I was thinking of doing one, and now am not sure I could even come close to what you gave us (without the awsome paint job).

Another huge addition that the toy company should take note of.

Nice looking custom. I attempted The Black Knight myself several months ago and had the problem of the legs and arms being too skinny.Tri-Gate does in fact carry the helmet as I used it on mine. I will PM you a pic. Great work keep em coming.

great stuff Dan. You and Tim now have me thoroughly convinced to grab some goblin figs next time I see them. It was an inspired eye by Tim to catch how well the conversion to a knight could go.

Nice work on the co-op with your daughter on Pegasus as well. That had to be fun.

Oh, and is that a new Steve Rogers head? I like it much better than the Gen. Hawk head you used before. I'm still planning on Res. Duke for mine, but I might be convinced otherwise if I had any Trakker heads in the fodder box.

for reference, what exactly went wrong when you boil n popped the arms? Would want to avoid any similar mistakes if I can.

I think you might be able to salvage the legs just by swapping out his boots for something bulkier. Maybe some fo those Prince Caspian knight figures clearanced at TJ Max would give you better knight boots.

Pegasus is truly awesome. I've been holding onto those wings waiting for a good project for them. Combining them with the Indy horse gives me that "wow, I would have never though of that" moments. Truly impressive.

Looks good!

At first I was worried that this would be a "leather jacket on top of chain mail" version of the character. Thanks for going for the traditional look on this one.

The helmet looks better than you're giving yourself credit for. It totally works with the figure and it's well done.
