I never had a USS Flagg but after seeing some of the amazing customs of some (and the original Flagg toy of course) I was inspired to create my own. The base I started with was actually a shelf that I rescued from our garage sale--my wife was going to let it go for $5... it didn't sell, so I repurposed it to form the skeleton. Not entirely accurate, but it makes a great table base and is incredibly sturdy. When I started looking at it, that's what gave me the idea too... the base has two "fins" that flare out to the sides, like the sides of a ship, so I immediately thought of making a large ship and then I thought of the Flagg.

Yesterday I made a plan and cut a large spare piece of MDF I had to shape (I'll upload the plans later if people are interested in seeing them) and painted with grey primer today. The tower is a Spiderman and Friends firehouse I've repurposed... I moved the 2nd floor so that it's a little taller and Joes can stand up straight in it now...
Not the greatest shape but I don't have anything else at the moment that even comes close to a Tower.

The rest is electrical tape and masking tape. The big "99" is from a printer, cut and glued in place.
The best part? When I need it to be a coffee table again, I just need to clear the table and flip the top over... I managed to use my router to bevel the edges with a nice finish ... sure it's an odd shape but it's about the right size. May not be the greatest piece but also might be good for other "temporary" dioramas and playdays... land battles and such when the Flagg isn't needed.

pretty cool vid. So I am guessing it is smaller then the actual flagg?

with hasbro saying the deck peices are gone, I wonder if they'd consider putting out a a Flagg custom set, with all the parts they have sans deck, with a pattern to cut out your own deck. I'd buy that.

I had to look up dimensions off somebody's site to see if it was smaller.
My coffee table is in fact quite a bit smaller, but that's ok with me.. in fact,
that's a good thing, as I didn't want it taking over my limited room space
(entirely, eheh).

I read that lengthwise, the original is around 91" at the longest points...
mine is only about 59" when you measure it crosswise from the longest
points... (diagonal corners). I don't have too many planes (yet) so I
guess my deck isn't so crowded yet. I don't even have a skystriker!
I hope to pick up the cool Raptor I've been seeing soon, heard that's
a good skystriker replacement.


If hasbro does come up with something like Flagg parts, I'm in for
buying a new Tower, maybe... and maybe some fuel truck parts.

I'd like to see some different angles. Looks really cool and great make-shift tower idea. Never would have thought of that myself.

Though I'd leave it as the FLAGG all the time, even if I needed to use it as a regular table. Its just too cool of an idea to hide by flipping it over.

Really like this. A real Flagg would be a cool coffee table, but is too large and too short at the same time, while not being sturdy enough. This works out great for so many reasons.

Tell ya what, as a past Flagg owner, this is the best idea ever. The Flagg is a great set, but fragile as all get out and getting worse by the day. Making your own out of wood is a fantastic idea - now just grab a conning tower for cheap along with the other parts. You can spend 1/5th of a real Flagg but have something that will last and last with no expensive breakage. Now you've gone and made me want to do one.

Crap! Oh well, guess I'll get to doing some woodworking and looking for a coffee table now.

Here's the inside of the tower. I'm not quite finished here... just moved the second floor around so that 25A Joes can stand upright under the second floor and turned it 90 degrees so that half is more open. The bed I kept as a "sick bay". I'd like to get more computer screens in there. Really, I need a better tower altogether but racking my brains haven't come up with anything on the cheap. May just have to build from wood from scratch

And here's the plans I drew up and used. I made some slight errors in bevelling which required me to recut the top left corner, so my actual dimensions aren't quite like the drawing, but it's close. Units are in inches.


Here's an alternate plan I drafted first and then discarded, based on the outline of the original Flagg's blueprints. I decided this was a bit too complex in detail to cut and more than I needed, so I decided to simplify. But I wanted to include it here for documentation purposes. Enjoy!

Hasbro would make a mint if they released a limited edition coffee table Flagg like this. I would buy one. Outstanding work on this piece!

The grey I used is actually Krylon grey primer. Dries fast and is cheaper than finish paint. Works great.

With a real Flagg I'd be more concerned about sturdiness than height. Didn't that thing come apart anyway? How were you supposed to play with it? (never had one, didn't know).

If I put one on a table I might paint the table blue or blue/white for water first, rather than make the table an extenion of the carrier. Depends on the table...

okay so you use a spray paint, makes sense. I haven't been able to custom any vehicles, cuz i don't have the space, but once i move i plan too, and a carrier coffee table witha 'sea' base would be the "LASER BLAST".
