Here's my Wizard Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files Series of Books. Came out of semi retirement to make him, I love the character so much.

He's Movie Sabertooth shaved. Everything there was pretty much perfect.

The magical effects are interchangeable using holes drilled into the effects, and small holes drilled into the sleeves of the coat. Put a cut down nail in each side and you can theoretically add any magical effect you want. In the side pictures you can see how the nail fits in. When removed, the holes are not visible as they are small and drilled into the black coat.

The hat was a Chap Mei adventurer head drilled out for the hat and shaped.

I only know the character from the TV show adaptation, but this is a sweet custom. I like how you made use of those effects.

Did he use a hockey stick in the books too?

I wish you could have normalized his hands but they do have the perfect pose already. I like the way you incorporated the effects as well.

Dude, the show was crap. ;-) You really need to read the book.

In the books he uses a staff, rather than a hockey stick, a carved rod instead of a drumstick, and most importantly a Magnum .357. Also the girl is a short blonde and cute, and Bob is just a skull. He's also 6'8 in the books, so he needs the extra height, which is why I liked using the Sabertooth as a base.

I will take Pluv's advice to heart - are you thinking shorter fingers, or putting the other hand into more of a pistol grip? I was thinking the latter and might be able to do it with hot water - though I still need to be able to have space to make the effect come out.

Note that the effect with the nail can be done with larger barrel guns too - drill a hole in the end, and fit a pin in. I've done it with a marauder Mac10, and shortened the blast effect down to just the flame. Great way to reuse a lot of those weird ROC missiles.

love the modular effects. also love the overall look and feel to him (is a great base for some characters from the Grimnoir Chronicles as well).

my critiques would be

a) the hands, as pluv said. I think I'd change them both out, to be honest. Use maybe a Dr. Strange left hand - for articulated casting poses, and any pistol grip right hand. I know the sabretooth hands are molded to the arms, but it's an easy swap for a skilled customizer like yourself. You could even make the hands easily interchangeable for various poses, with different hand gestures for different spells?

b) the hat. I get it. And I think it's the perfect type. but I'm not fond of the way it fits. Perhaps drill it out even further? If you're happy with it, it's not a huge issue. And it's always hard to have removable hats that still look perfect while worn.

oh man -

Dresden has been on my to-do list *FOREVER* -- i'm glad to see someone tackle it & job well done, sir!

I am totally stealing that 'effects' idea - that can be used in so many ways!

Very cool use of those effects.

I like the hands as is, but alternate hands for other uses might be good.

There are somewhat labor-intensive ways to make interchangeable hands, which I could try to help you with if interested.

Thanks for the critiques!

I'm not completely happy with the hands either, I love the pose, but there's something deformed and misshapen about them. There's also an aspect of the character, that one of his hands was badly damaged for most of the series, so a swappable hand not only helps with the holding of the gun, but also with that aspect as well. I will think about that. I had a PTE hand set aside for just such an edit. I suspect that chopping and pegging should work fine, but honestly, I'm rusty enough that I'm a little frightened to do it at the moment. 8-O

I also considered microman hands, but not sure that really goes with the figure. I have enough kicking around with some inetersing hand poses. If/when I do tackle the hands, I'll ask for advice from you Spin.

On the hat - yeah, that wasn't even the first one. I sort of butchered the first one dealing with the dent in the top, and trying to drill out the bottom, which ended up with a biggish hole in the top. I kinda chickened out with going any larger with the hole on this one. I also wanted a tight fit so I wouldn't lose it. It's a compromise tempered by the fact that I don't have any others to replace it if I mess up...

He needs a staff and blasting rod at a minimum, and I can see how the gun hand looks molded into place with hot water around the gun. Honestly though, I think that I might leave it alone for the moment until I regain my confidence, then I'll tackle some significant improvements.
